I do however like the concept of different languages not only reflecting but shaping differences in how cultures conceive of what we'd assume was the same exact thing. Instead it turns out that the way we conceptualize just about everything is based on our prior knowledge, much of which is learned through...language.

This is one of the reasons that I feel learning a language is so important to me. True understanding of another culture is only obtained when one is able to understand and think in the native language.

Translation can only do so much. To get a true understanding, it's important to understand the basic way of thinking that influences and is in turn, influenced by, language.

Of course, I have a whole lot of reasons why I love languages; that's only one.

I don't that I know of I just find the Russians fasinating.

I'm mostly German and English, then Scottish, and some Canadian. The last three coming from one side. But those go back long way. German came over during ww2ish I think. I dont know my grandmother on that Side aren't close, my English side came over in the mayflower.

I did briefly start learning Esperanto years ago, but I don't think I'd find enough people to speak with, so I gave it up. It's an interesting language to study though, for sure.

I haven't gotten to speak it with anybody so far, but this is unsurprising, as I don't really talk to many people at all regularly.

On the Internet, however, lernu! is pretty active, and so is the channel #esperanto (perhaps it begins with two hashes; I can't recall) in freenode (actually, the whole network is pretty interesting for all kinds of geeky pursuits). I've read something about some Esperanto presence in Duolingo and Lang8, but haven't checked it out yet.

I agree, but I think it's way too late for that. I like science in general, because it's so refreshing to seek the truth, instead of looking for clever new ways to conceal it, even from yourself, like most human interaction seems to be about  However, I'm going to look for any snowball's chance in hell I might still have of ever becoming a scientist in physics.

In physics was meant as where I'm going to look for any snowball's chance in hell to become a scientist. I guess it can be read as showing I don't know the word physicist

Well, I'm sorry that you feel it's too late. I tend to think it's never too late to learn or start a new career, until one's dead, anyway.

You seem to be very intelligent, and I think it would be a shame to waste it. You could be very successful, I think, in whatever you decided to do.

I feel it's too late for me to get schooling in some things only because I can't handle taking many classes at once. It would take me forever to complete a degree in those disciplines.

I would have liked to become a linguist, anthropologist, biologist, or a doctor (except I'm not good with handing "icky" things, so maybe not), but I know that at this point I don't have the ability to deal with schooling and deadlines. Not ruling it out for the future, though. I'm going to work on my terrible executive functioning in the very near future.

i think it's attractive. in addition, folks who know more than one language are less likely to develop symptoms of alzheimer's.

I think in terms of attractivness, it really depends on what type of people you are looking for. Some may find it intimidating, while others may find it fascinating.

In Europe, it can be very valuable, considering that there are many different countries (with different languages) in close proximity to each other, while in North America, there are basically three standard languages (English, French, and Spanish), with English being the most common.

I find it pretty attractive, but I also have an interest in languages in general.
