Would this series be a success if Christian was ugly & poor?
Yes.

There is an erotica author named Jenny Trout who did a recap of all the 50 Shades books that are both hilarious and unflinchingly critical about just how horribly written and exemplifying of abusive relationships rather than proper BDSM relationships they are. I've never read the original books, but the recaps include a lot of text from the originals and from the many, many OT samples she shares I can safely say that the recaps are so much better written than the 50 Shades books themselves. They go by chapter--here is the recap of chapter one of the first book, if anyone is interested: http://jennytrout.com/?p=3208
It's a very thorough and thoughtful take-down of all that is wrong with the 50 Shades books, and I personally really enjoy Jenny's (very humorous) writing style. It took me a few weeks but I eventually read all the recaps and it was worth it.

(Note to Moderators: my warning number is wrong on my profile but apparently can't be fixed so I will note here that it is actually 2, not 3--the warning issued to me on Aug 20 2016 was a mistake but I've been told it can't be removed.)
