Okay here is the score card, version I, in Imperial units:

Hale Bopp: Guy 5'8" to 6', girl no estimate
NorthWind: Guy 5'7" to 5' 11", girl no estimate
Smudge: Guy 5'10", girl 5'6"
Krafty: Guy 5'7", girl 5'
Naturalplastic: Guy 5'7", girl 5'2" (eyes of blue, has anybody seen my gaaal?).
Soloquist: Guy 5'4", girl no estimate

To:Hale Bopp and NorthWind. If you're gonna give yourself a point spread as wide as four inches you might as well just say "I have no idea how tall he is". Lol!

 That looks better.

So Boo, who is the winner?

Well, I did say I have no idea how tall they are. It's not me who claimed that it is possible to guess from any normal full body picture.

What does this have to do with dating?

Because it was split from a thread in L&D, and also this is can be associated with girls trying to guess the heights of guys in pics they see on dating sites.

Just trying to prove you cannot?

Yes.

Quote:
My instant guess would be they are between 5 foot 8 and 6 foot. Want me to guess properly?

Waiting for other replies before telling.

I’ll need to do some calculations.

You can see their heads and body, so what happened to your magical formula?

I never implied I had a magical formula. I implied you can use standard measurements to near accurately guess someone’s height, in contrast to you saying it’s not possible, and airheads on forums getting all upset about it.

I can’t do this now I am at an airport. Maybe at the next free wifi stop.

I already told you it wasn’t a proper guess.

lol at whoever said 5 foot. They must be deformed if they’re 5 foot.

Final answer: guy 6 foot 1
Girl including shoes 5 foot 10

Still rough but I have to hurry.
People at the airport must think I’m mentally unstable, poking random people with my thumb trying to do rough measurements.

I didn't say 5 foot zero. I said 5 foot 2 or 5 foot 3 for the woman.

Just so we're clear: I never said that a full body picture was a way to automatically know a person's height, just that if there were some kind of furniture or something that is usually around the same size in that picture then you can get a rough idea of the person's height by comparing the two. If the things around the person in the picture are the kind that one doesn't know, that makes this method pretty useless, which is the case with that picture since I have no idea where it was taken. The things around them could be really small or really big.

But since you specifically asked for my opinion along with hale_bopp's... I'd say they're around 170 cm, both of them. The woman is slightly hunched, but she also seems to be wearing heels, so they might even be the exact same height.

ok the winner is.....

***Drums***

Well...no one, but we have few half-winners, the best half-winner is:

Using H_B's magical formula the man works out to be about 5'4" for me.

He guessed right for the man (he's 164 cm according to medical record....barely 5'4, let's assume he was 165 cm at that age). Good job Soliloquist, how did you do it? Did you guess from my own height?

Kraftie and naturalplastic had a close estimation for the woman (her height now is 155 cm, let's assume she was 156-7 cm back then)

So in other term, the biggest losers in this game was Hale_bopp and Fireblossom  170 cm? 6 ft 1? Your height-calculation-on-picture skill is TERRIBLE.

I know their heights because like Soliloquist guessed, they're my parents in the 70s, when they were still engaged.

Excuses...excuses...

You had the Roman column standing there, you could google it to find out their height of its bottom part, you could use it as a scale reference. Where are your Indiana Jones skills?

FAILURE!

I seriously had no idea that was "the Roman column"; my knowledge about famous places around the world is pretty limited to those that interest me but sure, what ever makes you feel better.

The funny thing that all the women who replied gave very inflated numbers.

This thread should be sticked as legendary.

The truth is, it's quasi-impossible to tell height from photos, photos are 2D by default, even if there's an object in photo of a known standard size (ie. chair) it's hard to tell the distance difference between that person and the object, and the perspective distance of each from the camera - and since most photos are small like this one (It's not a poster photo) any minor miscalculation makes big difference (I don't know Soloquist's secret tho, come... explain to us).

So I call BS that anyone call tell and even estimate the height from photos - many dates were surprised from my height when they met me for real and most of my photos are full body.

Sorry ladies (I am referring to two ladies only). I have won the argument and I have proven that your claim is bs.

Don’t historians use time of day and shadows do figure height of people and objects in photos? That said they use computers and math.
