I was presumed reading at the thread's title about turtles as in sexual innuendo joke? When I was a student in high school and uni there were girls talking about 'turtles'. When I hear about them it doesn't mention about the species nor films in some way. They were laughing at me when I was asking them 'what you mean about turtles?'.

It turns out something about female's genitalia as a reference to turtles.

In relation to OP's experience, there were many times in conversations with friends and people in my networks don't understand what I mean by their reference. I think NT brains are wired to sociable unintelligent reference in lives. Aspies are relying on actual or factual information while NTs make up. This is true that we don't read people's jokes. That when things come awkward.

I think Big Bang Theory TV show is good example of learning jokes because it tailors to Autistic perspective. I laughed at the jokes on this show way more than everybody else even stand-up comedian shows, comedy movies, and that etc. I think NT usually live in their own world of misreading information as their minds lack of adaptability to structural thinking 'outside of their box'.

Maybe it's just because it's late here, but the more I look at/hear in my head the word "turtles", the funnier it sounds. It's one of those "doesn't sound like a real word" words.

as far as I know some people in high school liked to appear quirky by saying things like "i like turtles" but it's a cliché and they don't actually know anything about them except how they look like :ninja:

It’s a non-response to questions they think are stupid. Or to people they think are beneath them.

M: ...ok, wow! That’s really interesting. How about we meet for lunch and we can talk about this some more?

F: I like turtles.

Translation: fat chance.

Was in a pet-shop once where a little girl put her hand in one of those tanks while the shopkeeper was feeding the turtles. Well, she doesn't like turtles, let me tell you

Yeah...ok, that would follow my usual pattern and that is exactly the kind of remark I’d NORMALLY suggest. But the problem is I happen to already know “I like turtles” is just another way of saying “piss off.”

Kinda like when someone says “It was so nice meeting you.” Translation: Stop talking and leave now.
