Yes, I was. In 2002.

I went into the Old Town. I walked there---it's only about a couple of kilometres from the cruise ship area.

I saw that sign I mentioned from a window of the cruise ship.

too bad you never saw Split then :) Much more to see there - the only (almost) completely preserved Diocletian's palace in the world - with underground chambers where is now market, with so many archaeological artefacts...
