oh yeah, I forgot about the sending money home bit. Well, that came to an end soon enough..;)

Actually, I think Corazon Aquino banned the mail-order bride bit back in the 90s, not long after my bud got 'rooked'. There were abuses on both sides (some American men thought they were getting an LBFM (don't ask), instead of a human being...

I have never contacted a Russian girl but I have used online dating services before as well as penpal clubs.

Personally, if what you are looking for is an international girlfriend for correspondence and want to make plans to meet each other(on your own efforts) a penpal club will do just fine.

By default there will be people of the opposite sex looking for possible marriage partners. There is even one Signal Penpal Magazine where you can browse online and not have to pay one red cent. (Of course there are no guarantees with anyone you meet online. But then again the same could be said for meeting people the traditional way as well).

On the other hand if you are like me and want more bells and whistles you could get a membership in an online introduction or dating service for maybe about $25 or $30/month.

I really don't recommend getting a mail order bride, especially from Russia. While I have nothing against the country, most mail order bride operations there are scams. The women are well aware of the anti-male divorce laws in the US. So they come to the US, marry a lonely guy, then take him for all he's got. Russian women in general tend to be quite demanding, and enjoy being wined and dined. (At the same time, the Russian culture is fairly patriarchal.) In addition, they tend to be emotionally cold to new people, unless you're very good-looking and charming. (Or maybe I just had some bad experiences.) So while there are cases when things work out nicely, the risks outweigh the potential rewards.

If I were ever to go the mail order bride route, I'd get a woman from South America. I like the culture over there, and most countries are quite stable economically. The southern area of the continent is very European in character, and has a large European population. Argentina even has a strong Jewish presence. The women in South America tend to be easygoing, hard-working, and emotionally warm. (At least, the recent immigrants from that region I met recently were like that.) And you gotta love that sultry exotic look they have. I know Spanish pretty well, so it'll be easy to communicate with my new bride when she first arrives to the airport. Even though there are still risk, I feel safer going this route, for some reason.

I met a woman (27) from Poland who wanted a convenience marriage. She is already in the country, but wants to stay. We are friends now and almost could have dated. I don't know if she is still wanting sponsorship. Most of the times it's mainly business. Be wary.

Otherwise, I've met a lot of European women on the job and they are such a joy to be around. There is something about them that makes for a refreshing break from American NT women. Many of the foreign women are more ASD friendly.

Be careful with whatever you do, you don't want to end up with a life you didn't want just for the sake of insulting your family.

I'd rather be single for the rest of my life.

While I agree with what you are saying, I can also understand why people would go for this sort of thing. Howver I would never dare risk trying to myself, because I would be too paranoid and also the amount of dating scams out there these days i would just rather keep to myself.

I think it'd be really great if someone found a mail-order bride and went through with the marriage and they actually ended up having a successful relationship, but I think would be extremely rare. Most of the time, you would probably be lucky if she stayed with you for much longer than she needed to in order to get her permanent citizenship. But, if a man is OK with a woman only being married to him for citizenship and his money, and he doesn't mind losing half of his money when the divorce happens, then he should go ahead and do it!

I got together with a Korean man, and we planned to marry. When I got to LA, we got the marriage license.
In Korea, License = marriage. In the US, it doesn't. Once he thought he was safe, he turned to me and informed me that he didn't love me and that he only wanted US citizenship. This was a year ago December. His Visa was about to run out and he'd have to go back to Korea.

He's getting used to life back in Korea now - he can't come back for three years.

my opinion

mail-order brides = no way, if I was left with a choice of either a mail-order bride or being single for the rest of my life I'd choose the latter

I would rather not pay for some ass hole to simply get into the country, using me to do it and such
f**k them
I don't give a s**t what kind of life they have, if they tried to use me to get a better one (well like where they just use me) then to hell with them
plus I could never trust them anyways...
I can't trust people IRL

Try Costa Rica. It is insane. You can get girls without even trying. Just make sure to use a condom, because the typical Costa Rican girl has 2 kids by the time she is 20.
