nobody would hire me now even if i wanted a job. i do get the odd paying gig fixing damaged old audio. computers can do magical things compared to the old analog days. i finally have the right kinda employment now, that of being a bump on a log. the GOP has its stone heart set on eliminating retirement altogether for the working class and the lower part of the middle class. as it is, full social security retirement age here is now 70, 62 for a substantial haircut.
Yep you also need to sacrifice medical insurance, if you retire early. You just go without and hope for the best. I don't see how people afford paying the premiums on their own, they are easily the biggest monthly expense for those over 50.
I dread going to a doctor or hospital, I just feel like that would ruin me financially, even though I have insurance, there are so many tricks and traps involved in medical billing. People get into debt fast if they get ill. I reckon that is a chance you take.

cell service out here has a monopoly, only verizon has any coverage and it is similarly expensive. so no cell phone for me. dsl internet is spotty and not considered high speed. i live too far from a trunk line. when it snows out here, you must have an AWD or else you're just stuck in place 'til it melts. no plowing services out here.

for folk my age, the cheapest medical insurance is about a thousand per month, and it is basically catastrophic only with very high deductibles/copays. can't afford that. being a veteran i qualify for local care with my local [40 minute drive away] doctor but it covers only primary care, if i end up in the ER it is a big worry. last time i was in the ER/admitted to surgery, it was a house-sized bill [like buying a house cash on the barrel], luckily they deemed me to be a poverty case and wrote off the bulk of it, still paid off in installments what was left over, for years, only recently finished it off.

The American heath system is crap.
The whole world knows that.
I hope the Democrats do something about it if they get in.

Well, I reckon--once I move out to the sticks--I would do my interneting on those occasions I drive down to the city library. I wonder whether they let you hook up a laptop to their wifi. If not, Starbucks. Maybe once a week type of thing, a real outing where I see other folk and get my social in. Albeit complete strangers and most of the interaction just barrista serving me a cup of plain coffee.
I don't know how I would obtain the latest TV shows - probably resort to my extensive video library. Maybe I'd rent out a hotel once in a while to download a bunch of new stuff once in a while or make a friend in order to do all that for me.
What's appealing is, like you said, low property tax, low water bill, more freedom--like I bet you can nude sunbathe whenever and wherever you please--probably even grow weed . Also very little human noise, you just have the wildlife and that's it. Downside is when something breaks, who to call? I reckon you have to be your own handyman.
The more I think about it the more I think maybe I am better off where I am. I am not into weed anymore and can actually get away with nude sunbathing anyway due to the privacy shrubbery in the back yard.
It is nice to get on the phone and get someone out here to help out with the home maintenance every once in a while.
The downside is, got to make that dinero in order to have that option in the first place, and to make that dinero got to spend those hours keeping the boss(es) happy.

water bill ain't exactly low, but lower than california's. a lot of "homeowners associations" out here. fascist they tend to be. their dues are bundled with my water bill so i end up paying about $50/month for water that elsewhere costs a fraction of that. i would not sunbathe here due to the insects, i live next to a swamp. bats here have a field day munching on 'em on the fly, as it were. as for maintenance, now and then i luck out on a neighbor with fixit ability who takes pity on seeing my broken down place. boors keep knocking down my mailbox out front then lecture me if i catch them, "why don't you just pay for a P.O. box in town and stop bothering people?" the nerve.

In the suburbs, $15,000 and up is not unheard of. They just might pay for water, too.
here, if you live in town and are anywhere near something pretty such as the water or a mountain/valley view, taxes are through the roof, like $10k for a $200k valuation rambler on a little land. but my tin can out in the middle of the woods is about $380/annum. $4000 was what my late folks hadda pay for their little rambler next to the military base, back in the 00s. hate to think of how much it'd be now.

We have about 650 square feet of space, planned pretty well.
no way would i be able to afford $3800, so yes indeed, only $380/year. 1/10th of what my folks had to pay 12 years ago. my tin can is 800 sq. ft. on a 1/3 acre on a dead-end street on the edge of the community, neighbors are off the covenant and live pretty wild. covenant can't make 'em do yardwork or make their place pretty.

^What "covenant"? Are you referring to the local government / municipality?
do you grow some veg and herbs there, or have any berries etc?

it is a covenant community, another way of saying dues-paying HOA. they have rules about how long your grass can be, the upkeep of your house, not having junk visible from the road et al. they also manage the water. i have a brown thumb and stuff i deliberately try to grow usually wilts even if i remember to water it. only a rugged and voluminous old rhody has lasted longer than i've lived there despite me. it is now about as tall as the tin can. it likes it there because the sun reflects on it from behind.

I had to look up "brown thumb" - at first thought it was the name of a plant or shrub that I hadn't heard of!
