Pareto actually came up with two different principles
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareto_efficiency
This one has to do with the allocation of resources

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareto_principle
The Pareto principle is only tangentially related to Pareto efficiency. Pareto developed both concepts in the context of the distribution of income and wealth among the population.

how would you say that could be applied to the problem described in this thread? what would it take?

I think 314pe's agreeing with me that most people DO have conventional tastes influenced by a variety of factors including genetics, the media, and our biology.

Yes, you always get the minority interested in something odd or unusual or something most of the population would find a turnoff, but they are just that - a minority.

I guess it can be assumed most people are actually average in attractiveness, and learn to accept most people aren't supermodels and have realistic expectations (such as me), but there's still a loud minority out there that some men and women seem to come across often who have completely unrealistic ideals regarding attractiveness that no average person can meet.

If you want to relate unrealistic expectations regarding attractiveness to '20% of men get 80% of women', well, most attractive people in the media are unrealistic to achieve and only a tiny minority of people ever achieve such looks without hiring expensive nutritionists, stylists, etc. and they might have great success getting many women as they live up to the minority of women with unrealistic expectations tastes.

Exactly. It's silly to say that being unusual does not impact dating. Also, even other odd and unusual people often prefer to be with a typical partner.

The 'everyone has different taste' argument is absolutely ridiculous and only raises further questions.

Why do we care about our personal hygiene at all if we know some people out there wouldn't care about our hygiene and cleanliness?

Why do we try to eat healthy and exercise for a fitter body if some people out there are attracted to fatties?

Why do we wash our hair, try to dress as fashionable and ordinary rather than unconventional or strange? Why don't we just war turbans and other clothes from other countries or togas or whatever if we WANT to?

Better yet, why do we even try to work on our social skills or confidence AT ALL to fit into N.T. society better when there will be people out there who don't care?

Why do we even look for a job if at least on person out there wouldn't care if we were unemployed and just sucked off the system?

why do we self-improve to make ourselves more desirable in any possible way?

Because society has set standards for what constitutes attractive and successful, most people tend to agree with these ideals, and many of us tend to mold and shape ourselves and work hard to strive toward achieving said ideals.

I get tired of people making the 'everyone has different standards' argument.

Honestly, you can't please everyone, but there are some things you can do that would please at the very least a large minority rather than an infinitesimally small minority.

^ Yup. There are things almost everyone agrees upon, continues to evaluate on regardless his/her claim that they're outside of those basics.

I, myself, prefer to be clean because it feels good.

When I'm dirty, my eyes tend to sting.

My whole being is affected adversely when I'm dirty.
