We've too many of those already, tell her to do something useful like maths or cure cancer
she cares a great deal about the inner workings of the mind. she is Jungian, whatever that means. she is very talented in maths, but not at all interested in biology. i tried to encourage psychiatry over psychology, but her heart is set. she researches psychology studies for 'fun'.

He was a well meaning chap Carl Jung shame his teacher was just a great big piss taker when all is said and done regarding psychology.
The future is neurology more then psychiatry. Psychiatry really is only concerned with the dispensing and management of various drug groups to control mental health conditions beyond that your just a bog standard doctor. Neurologists try to understand the physiological causes behind people's behaviour or condition and as it develops a greater evidence base the profession increasingly is taking more of a leading role in the diagnosis treatment and management of all sorts of conditions to do with the brain from trauma and damage to severe depression and PTSD.
IF your daughter is concerend with understanding the inner working of the mind then she will find more gained out of learning councilling techniques and becoming a counciller were you are actually putting theory into practice in actual direct communication. Psychologists in an attemp to be "scienctific" or "clinical" distance themselves from the individual they work with and really have very little one to one contact with people depending on their school of psychology. I've never felt the input of psychologists into the multi diciplinary teams i've worked with in my career have ever contributed enough to the benefit of a service user to justify the kind of salary that they command. If anything the more "human" a psychiatrist is the better the performance of interventions. Their the ones with the knowledge, power and influence not the psychologist who are an afterthought.
Your daughter should also be aware that it is one of the most oversubscribed degree courses in the western world's higher education system. We would have trainne psychologists on 6 month rotations and there would always be far too many of them in these trainee positions each would be competing for one permanent psychology position in some remote obscure yorkshire mining town. It gets worse in positions located in main cities and sub-urban areas. Far too much competition if you want to get a job in that field.

Laz, this might be a lot to ask, and the wrong time and place, so don't answer if so, but could you possibly give a clueless brother some clues on how to go about getting into a counselling career, from scratch? You seem to know your onions.

o lord she totally wants to study and work in the UK.
she isn't at all interested in neurology. she has a plan that will hopefully take her quite far in her field... after all, there may be a glut of psychologists, but there are only a certain number that are amazingly talented at their jobs. she has 97% in her high school psychology class right now, and will finish high school a year early as she accelerated her own program. i'm not worried!

Are you sure she's all NT? That was a really cerebral and verbose answer.
hahaha i have my suspicions, but she and her father will have none of that! she was diagnosed with an auditory processing disorder (probably dyslexia), which i believe is one hallmark of many aspies. also, she is very un-cuddly.
but... she knows people really well and does really well socially. she can read body language and facial expressions and she is kind of a leader amongst her peers. she adjusts well to changes in her life and environment too.
i think that being raised in a household with an aspie mom has probably influenced her a lot, anyways!

She might want to hold off as our current government is intent on butchering our higher education system at this moment in time

But otherwise, yeah we always take in refugee's from the otherside of the pond who want to sample the free world
Ah if she has the brains she'l find a niche so long as the talent and potential is recognised then it will all fall into place. She just should be aware of the gap between what psychology aspires to be and what psychology actually is in practice. That ain't gonna come from wikkipedia and text books.
I'm a shalot man myself (ba dum dish)
You can subscribe to do courses in councilling. Sometimes people do on the sidelines in addition to their profession. The head of my school of learning disability nursing for example in addition to her role as a nurse was also a councillor for people with learning disabilties as well. The people she was involved with were quite complex characters such as someone who despite their learning disability and spent the last few years being the carer to their mother with alzheimers who eventually died. Upon her death she struggled to find meaning in life as her only friend and companion was gone now so part of the councilling was to enable her to express the grief of her loss which she struggled to do so having learning disabilities but also to be able to move on and find a circle of friends and community to belong too.
She also dealt with someone who had autism who while detained on the mental health act in hospital was still being prostituted by her pimp who would come into the hospital under the guise of being a family member. Very angry person who had been sexually exploited from a young age by multiple family members followed by so called friends and finally drug addiction and homlessness which is when she became detained by the mental health services. I think she is still working with this individual now after 5 years.
Thats a very specialised end of councilling that you would have to have quite a degree of background knowledge and experiance of learning disability beforehand. But if gives you examples of the kind of raw emotions that you would have to listen to and help the person learn to deal with through some dialouge but mostly actively listening.
Some people don't neccesarily like the techniques of councilling though so be aware of what your getting into and the role you are going to play if you are being a councillor. It would be interesting to see how someone with AS behaves in the role of being a councillor as it requires there to be strict boundaries and a clear understanding of what your role is to the other person. But being human beings we naturally do feel for others when we hear of suffering so its not always as easy and there are certianly moments were you do break boundaries, but you wouldn't be human if you didn't do such things.
