I thought guys in Americans approach women by Chuck Norrisly roundhouse-kicking the evil bastards and hence wining their hearts.

Totally. Nothing makes an American woman swoon quite like a guy beating someone up.

People will hit on you but I'd imagine it depends who you are, where you are, what you're doing, who those guys are, and so on.

If you lived in the EU I'd suggest coming to live in the UK... well, half the world is living here already, so there's no reason why you can't join in too.

I actually consider living in the UK. It's just hard though considering I've never been there longer than like, a week. And quite expensive. But marrying a Brit and running off to England with a tri-citizenship is appealing. :D

What's wrong with Turkey? It's a nice country.

I would pay to make it go away! Constantly being hit on just makes my anxiety worse. Especially when I think I'm just having a pleasant conversation with someone and I realize at the end they didn't listen to a word I said.

Does wearing a ring on the left hand 4th finger work? In many parts of America I'm used to [1] men who aren't blind usually have enough decorum to leave a woman wearing a wedding band alone without even attempting to gauge whether the woman is married/engaged or not.

[1] Disclaimer: The parts of America I'm used to are New England, New York City and the California Bay Area.

^ Re: Crudeness. Most of the men in New York City who aren't actually in too much of a hurry to notice other people on the street will not engage a female stranger. A female relative said it best to me: "As a woman you don't even make eye contact with strange men on the street; it's an invitation to be propositioned in some fashion."

I'm sure it would, but I don't have a ring suitable to this purpose. I don't like most jewelry.

I like Turkey, but I don't belong here. Speaking Turkish will never be the same as speaking English. And I just don't fit into the culture. I'd NEVER marry a Turkish man.

yeah, it doesn't happen to me (when i was very young and very thin i got the catcalls and such, but never someone trying to actually pick me up unless i ws drunk in a bar).

i guess... +1 for living in Canada? or is that -1? or maybe it's just not a universal phenomenon for all women?

The only time that any women hit on me during my single years was when they were either drunk, stoned, trying to sell something, or already hitting on all the other men in sight (maybe all of the above ... ?).

It also seemed to happen more often after my fiance and I announced our engagement ... why would that be?

You come across as spouting a very socially conservative line on this, when it's obvious even from this thread that lots of women get randomly hit on. TeaEarlGreyHot in particular.

(Tequila titters up his sleeve at the similarities between some strands of feminism and the more backward strains of social conservatism)

"Socially conservative"? Because I've never witnessed or experienced a guy going up to a strange woman and trying to initiate non-platonic contact, and don't believe it happens nearly as much by definition to women who aren't exceptionally striking-looking? :?

I dunno what that has to do with either feminism or social conservatism, but I've noticed that at least in the case of the former, you're not exactly sure what such lofty words mean.
