The only problem I see here is the word, "only."

Preferences are fine. We all have them.

Doing things to increase the likelihood of fulfilling those preferences is fine, and could even be said to be positive and proactive. Go for it.

The problem comes when you make those preferences into hard and fine rules, to the point where you would ignore the perfect relationship if it landed smack under your nose.

I once dated a guy who told me a few dates in that he was thinking he should marry a women in religion X, for many of the same reasons you just described. Well, that ended it for me: I'm not of religion X and, if I was, I would have felt like I was just a box on a checklist, and not someone he really cared about. Years later he's still single and, I've heard, wondering why we never worked out. Honestly, I don't think him and I were ever meant to be, but how many other women did he let go of over religion? So .... just don't allow yourself to end up in that sort of space; there are many ways to fill in the gaps you are seeking to fill; finding a mate of that culture is just one.

i think that is really good advice.

you can always just try it for a bit then decide whether the culture of your partner makes makes a big difference or not. i can't see any other way of finding out. You could go for an extended visit and stay if you like it

And I bet he can rustle up an amazing three-course Lebanese meal an' all. Can't you, Boo?

(No, I'm serious, I'd have a reet good do at Lebanese food if I could.)

Very true, very true. ;)

Perhaps I should lay off the beer and come earlier in the day, then. ;)

If spirits are very highly taxed in Lebanon, let me know. I'll bring you a big bottle. (That gambit works wonders with Egyptians so I'm told. You can't get them away from you when you visit their country again.)

Well, not much an alcohol expert here, but whiskeys varies between $20 and $40, local wines around 15 to 30 while french wines are priced at least 10% higher for the same years.

That's fair enough, I wouldn't expect anything less. If I lived in Lebanon I probably wouldn't drink much beer in any case. ;)

The way it was told to me is that a bottle of Laphroaig that costs, say, L£58,000 in the UK can cost not far off L£300,000 on the Egyptian black market.

You can find plenty of beers here, this probably the only beverage being sold in the Islamic areas, but just stick to the Christian or Druze areas and you wouldn't have trouble in buying any beverage.

You have to try the Arak. ;p

My friend, I can drink pale piss anywhere. Good beer is what I'm talking about. ;)

So there isn't a problem with, erm, certain 'interested parties' trying to prevent its sale?
