Women and fancy cars....
i have had a number of girls that wanted to be my girlfriend before my current girlfriend (who is not really a true girlfriend), and none of them were in any way interested in my car.
this is my car (560 sel)
some people think it is opulent, but the girls think it is kind of "wanky" and they think i bought it for status reasons.
i bought it because i like the way it feels to drive, and i like the exhilarating rush of adrenaline that is provided when i put my foot down.
it is not really that expensive because it is old, but the girls i know think it must be expensive even though i have told them it is not (it is to repair and run however).
when we get to where we were driving to, we get out and close the doors behind us and never give another thought to the car we walk away from.
my car is not in the league of a porsche or lamborghini so i do not know.
As far as buying a car because of what brand it is, it's the same as buying a clothing item because of a brand label on it when you can buy a clothing item identical in appearance without the brand label for a fraction of the price. You're basically paying for an arbitrary social symbol, which in my opinion is the equivalent of flushing several grand (well a lot more than that really) down the toilet.
Exactly, as long as the car can go from one point to the next, that's the main purpose, however you must be able to appreciate mechanical aptitude and why different designs might appeal to different people, it is a matter of perspective. I think someone with mechanical aptitude can be impressive if they have an understanding and dedication towards learning about a specific car or means of transport.
If someone devotes hours to designing and building a car, is it as impressive to me as someone who spends hours designing a piece of art or architecture? Is it as impressive as someone that has a dedication towards a particular sport or in your case, a musical instrument? Of course not, however to someone with good mechanical aptitude and understanding, it might be.
I don't know, once people get to know me, my car hobby just becomes another "man he talks about ____ too damned much." I mean people find it useful and think I'm a magician because I can like change their brake pads, but yeah. But for me, in some ways, it's another thing that isolates me from people, as not too many people I know are into cars, nor do they wanna conversate about cars very much.
But yeah, cars are sweet.
Sweet 560SEL, B9. Cool! And Kjas, 180SXs are kinda fancy. It shows some class, that you bought one over like...a Sentra. Plus you could buy a RB26 Skyline motor and defeat all your car racing enemies with it. I kinda wish I got a S13 over my MKII Supra, but MKII Supras do look cooler, but an S13 has such easier to find parts...
An expensive car could be an indicator of wealth, and wealth is a big part of survival value.
If Mystery Method is to be believed human women are more predisposed to look for survival value in a mate whereas men look for more replication value.
Which makes a lot of sense seeing as when a woman is pregnant she is vulnerable and needs to be provided for, and human child raising is a long process.

You can get a porsche 944, 928 or 924 for less than what you got that merc for. I used to have this

with this many miles on it

it broke something new every day and got it for $1000. Nothing fancy about it.
Wow Kjas - how did you do it? Lol. Maybe cos Boo had already decided I was "one of them" and therefore nothing I said would be listened to. You gotta be open-minded, Boo. You can miss out on many potential partners and friends by dismissing people so easily, particularly when misunderstandings occur, which us aspies are so prone to.
Is this the same Boo that said that looks are the only thing that mattered?

Sounds like something out of the 15th century.
An indicator of wealth? but what is wealth an indicator of? Money isn't an indicator of good character since it can be stolen or inherited. That absolutely makes no sense and seems black and white, what if you don't want children? What if your partner can't have kids? Not everyone desires to be a father or a mother, there are some women that can't have children and some that simply don't want them.
^ It's instinctual to look for a mate with "survival skills" which has evolved into "lots of money" or "a good career" in modern society. Cars can be an indicator of such. It's like a bird building a big fancy nest to attract his mate.

I haven't actually seen him say that, but it would be an interesting contradiction for his own beliefs, wouldn't it?
I think it was in my old thread about rich guys, does that ring a bell?

For a gold digger? Maybe so. You are saying everyone just seeks to live at the pinnacle of the capitalist dream, right? That's the ultimate hope, the reason why everyone does everything is based on reaching the American dream? Everything you do and everyone you have ever approached has been based on that? It just sounds very black and white to me, surely there must have been other factors that attracted you to a person or attracted you to a certain interest or pursuit?
What about people like sunshower that preach practicality and simplicity over aesthetics? what about people that are minimalists and only appreciate the simple things in life? what about women that can't give birth to children? what about women that join the military? I am saying you can't look at it in black and white because not everyone desires the Hollywood lifestyle.
Exactly. For those who do go out with people for monetary reasons - it's the same as going for someone who is youthful/beautiful which most people do, or going out with someone more/as intelligent as you are - that's just as shallow a want. Boo shouldn't pick so heavily on those who disagree with his own values - people shouldn't need confirmation from him just because their values conflict. Everyone has different values and he should respect that. Just as there are different cultures, beliefs and whathaveyou. In the end, disrespecting other people for their values is wrong.

I'm afraid not. Link? Or maybe you could quote it here.

Yea, link it.
I am sure I wasn't talking about myself but about people in general.

I never said it's the only reason to pick a mate, nor that it is the criteria that I personally use. Only that animals (humans included) are instinctually wired to be attracted to things that indicate good genes or good survial skills. It's not black and white at all as its not the only reason to pick a mate and no one ever indicated so, my comment was mearly a statement of the underlying reason behind why some people DO do it.

Not really, a person can't leech from the beauty or intelligence of another, they can only appreciate it or engage it but a person can leech from the productivity or finances of another under the guise of love. You are saying that it's acceptable to date someone to leech from them financially? or that it's a major factor in why you would date someone?
