I don't get this dichotomy between NTs and people on the autism spectrum. With some people it's hard to know if they are NT or on the AS, they might be on it and not know it, I just don't get it. There's not always such a big difference between us.

I think it's more of an identity thing than anything else. I get the impression that too many people on this forum associate themselves with Aspergers or Autism way more than they should.

You mean like needing a place to belong?

Yes. Very prejudiced in the U.S. when it comes to social skills and extroversion. To say nothing of aspies, introverts are about as badly treated in the U.S. today as black people were before 1956.

I hope you don't really believe this. Equating your girl problems to the struggles of the black community during that period and the awful, awful racism that went on is pretty low, man.

I'm not equating my "girl problems" to this (what problems?). I'm equating bullying, employment discrimination, social cliques, the psychiatric industry, and everything else to this.

Bullying and cliques in schools, as well as employment discrimination, are a type of oppression and segregation, and the forced use of psychiatric medications actually causes death in some cases.

You are making a mockery of everything African Americans have ever fought for. Shut up.

Maybe. But bear with me for a second.
I am sensing too many people are too identified with their own egos. This isn't even about NT's or Aspies. There is no skin color, or any mental disorders, religious affiliation, sexuality, gender thing involved. When one person is too attached to their own ego, they fear that others won't treat them equally and as a result fight for acceptance instead. I have eventually learned that fighting for acceptance is a lost cause. So instead of trying to accept the Aspergers, I simply acknowledge it and fight to be treated as an equal among my friends, co-workers and others I meet. Needless to say, things work much easier when you use this approach rather than fight for acceptance.

Ok,I'm the negative nelly,or nancy,whatever.
But mentally ill people have been persecuted(or in some lucky cultures revered) for ages.
We got accused of being vampires,witches,werewolves,etc.....
It was never nice when they thought you were "odd" back then.
We have been hounded for ages.

Are you saying that people with Aspergers or autism are mentally ill?

Let me clarify, the question was," would you date a "NT".
I never "lumped"mental illness with Aspergers, but the stigma is the same.
I'm possibly diagnosed with HFA.
Bi-polar,anxiety,deferred axis ll personality disorder.
Yup,certified.
I don't call anybody a name I wouldn't give myself.

And I won't date anyone who isn't as out there as me.

I tried to keep this out of it.... I am part African American...so that is why I have issue with the statements made.

And I don't consider Autism a mental illness. Isn't AS a neurological disorder? Thought that was different???

It all gets stigmatized, and it's all basially a label.
Go to one shrink,get a diagnosis,goto another,get another label.
I thought the issue was "would you date a NT".
Well,that's also a label.
It's all labels.
But I like people like me,with misprinted labels, the ones "society" deems defective or whatever.

Would I refuse to date an nt?
By no means.

That said right now I only get along well with a handfull of nts and most of them are males so Id have to find someone I got along well with regardless of their mental condition.

In another note: we can split the offtopic discussion to wherever you want to move it IlovemyAspie

I've been trying to figure that out. I'm open to suggestions as to where to move the off topic discussion!

It depends.

If members are trying to focus on the dating aspects it d be here.
However we have an active thread about discrimination on this section already ,so maybe general discussion?
