Don't get me wrong, divorce is an epidemic and something needs to be done, throwing away the american dream and saying everyone should forfeit monogamy is not the answer. I for one still hope to have those things some day.

The gender roled ideas of marriage are incredibly outdated, too. Men aren't always - and don't even have to be the breadwinners in the family. I know married couples completely content living in their crappy 1 bedroom apartment, and I know other married couples who don't desire children. It's about 2 people who love each other hoping to spend the rest of their life together. And while it may be difficult in this day and age, it's not worth abandoning the idea over it.

^This. I agree with all of this.

Having whatever deal breakers for a relationship is not a crime.

It's not an excuse. They can do it, they do it and they face the consequences. If they're skilful criminals, chances are the consequences will be very affordable, because they won't get caught by either the police or anyone otherwise capable of harming them.

I'm not really familiar with your approach. I don't rob my neighbors or physically assault people because I don't expect to gain anything remotely worth the trouble I'd get into.

I'm actually too worried about how to defend myself to believe I have any chance to ever be a successful aggressor. I never know what resources other people have, even those who appear physically weaker than me, whereas I know exactly how limited mine are. I don't know, either, how many people would sympathize with them and hunt me down.

Moreover, I'm so used to being always the one in the wrong I seem to lack the ability to attack immediately and mercilessly those who wrong me, like people do, never hesitating or fearing they might have gone too far, and inspiring sympathy in whoever watches the fight. Just looking at my attempted victim's eyes would make me s**t my pants, and I'd know I'm definitely screwed---as if I didn't feel screwed enough already.

He doesn't need any more reasoning. Getting stabbed is his victims' problem, not his. If you don't want to be stabbed, you'd better be ready to fight back. The only person whose good will you can ultimately trust is yourself.

Not anyone can do it. And, before long, people would realize that place is no longer safe to walk around and take some measures. Sooner or later, the criminal would run into another skilled knife fighter, or into a gun fighter, and get killed.

I think most people have goals in life which would at best be severely compromised if they recklessly made more enemies than they strictly need to. This applies to serious criminals, too: they make a living at other people's expense and know very well not to gratuitously increase their chances of meeting a sorry end to their criminal careers.

I don't really think I'm resisting the temptation to assault people, because I don't feel it.

Divorce does seem to have become the new tradition. It is an accepted way of leveling out wealth between the men who work for it and the women who don't. If you are not married, you can't ever have a divorce. So once we get over that whole "marriage" tradition the divorce numbers will plummet.

But if no one gets married anymore, how will women collect alimony?

I haven't read anyone here saying everyone should forfeit monogamy; rather, that it should't be forced on those who don't want it. I think the best solution is to get rid of legal marriage. There won't be any kind of discrimination this way, by sexual orientation, by number of partners or by anything else, and, of course, private organizations with their own rites will still be able to discriminate whatever way they want to.

That may become a good reason to avoid marriage. Women who don't intend to play that trick should be more likely to agree to remain unmarried, even if they have children.

If a man stays single his entire life, he has deprived some woman, somewhere, of the opportunity to collect alimony.

What about the women who stay at home raising 3 children, or the women who actually make more than their husbands?

Wrongplanet doesn't give us the option of gender in our profile. My bad.

really don't get you. you support the mean, criminal and abusive people. do you feel people are right to attack and harm you?

threes good and bad. its not good to do those things. most people hare a moral code, its pretty similar to other peoples while not 100% lke they may be as*holes or do small things, most people will not kill or attack others. its not with ghe moral code to do so. these people got together and formed cities and nations. they appointed others with similar moral codes to punish the ones who don't' have a moral code. if everyone did what they wanted and thought such actions were ok we would never formed police or governments.

your post scares me.

well many states have a system in which when you live together for a min amount of time its the same as marriage even though not married. so they'd get it that way. though in a day in age where both sexes work and both might earn the same money, why should women get alimony anyways.

So then a man would be better off to live alone, and only 'rent' the company of a woman on a regular basis. He should take care lest she move in with him (or even leave a few of her personal belongings there) to justify her claims of having cohabitated with him.

yup, that explains why hookers/escorts are mostly women instead of men.

No one has mentioned about religion as a reason to get married. I wouldn't mind actually keeping everything separate - even down to separate houses, cars and beds (I like my sleep), but I'm religious and that is the reason I must marry.

and it kinda bothers me, irritates me, that once I do get my life together, i'm financially stable and have my own place, that I will become more attractive to women, I sometimes feel like telling my future self to shoe away, reject the women that are chasing me, it's like I want to say to them "why should I give you a chance now?", "you women didn't want me when I was not well-established, did not have my life together yet, you are gold-diggers that's what you are!!"
