I think its an over-statement that waxing backs is absolutely necessary...I personally would find that to be quite an unnatural look and not in a good way. I mean sure if its excessive it could be unattractive, but in general I don't see the big deal. I myself don't usually shave my legs, it really only visibly grows below the knee but its not thick. I also only shave arm-pits in the summer when its hot out. I have certainly heard females 'have' to shave off body hair to be appealing to anyone but I have a boyfriend so....that is clearly false. I imagine this is similar, in some social circles maybe women do prefer guys who wax their backs and maybe even chests and in other circles no one cares.
I think social norms pressure people to get rid of body hair, but I think it's kind of odd....to each their own though. Some people think you should shave 'down there' but again unnatural and added weirdness as well since the hair grows after pueberty so shaving it off makes it look like that process didn't occur at least to me it would.

As for body hair...I ain't de-furring for nobody. I am what I am and I ain't itching all over to please someone else. Pruning around the playground is one thing. But, not a full body deforestation.
But, it ain't for everybody.

It kind of is a big deal if you feel obligated to spend a significant fraction of your disposable income to remove it though.
How much is it?
In US currency about $50 a month.
I could think of a lot better things to spend $600 worth on a year than removing a bunch of hairs for no one in particular.
why not just use a cream? it's what women do who don't wax / shave.

I don't think you should worry about it too much at the moment, honestly.
I highly doubt that anyone you date is going to get to see your back before you start dating them, so back hair shouldn't have any bearing on your chances of dating someone.
And anyway, if you do start dating someone who's not fussed on your back hair, you can get them to help you wax it.

So, it can come up, oddly enough. And, if you have the wool sweater poking out of the top of your shirt, then there is no mystery there.

I guess for you it depends on your social scene. When I lived in the UK I was shocked at the amount of men using sunbeds, wearing tinted moisturiser and sporting GHD straightened hair, so if they are waxing too, that wouldn't surprise me at all.
I think man-hair is scratchy like a wool jumper, but I don't really care either way, in healthy relationships superficial things should not be deal-breakers.

I done a google image search, Jersey Shore men produced images of the beautiful people from the MTV show. Staten Island men produced images of a buck naked streaker, mug shots, mafia members in court and some very tall basketball players. I think I know what you meant though.
This most likely has to do with my tactile and olfactory sensitivities.
Out of interest though, if someone did have body hair would you write them off instantly or give them a chance to remove it?

I have some, but not much, body hair.
I'm not shaving it!
I don't smell bad because of it. I make sure I bathe every day--even when I'm home all day.
I understand the hassles that ladies must go through to shave their body hair. It doesn't seem fair, somehow.
I don't get turned on by women with a blatant beard/mustache, though
