So what you are looking for is films with lots of scenes with the heroin looking miserable because she's not been made to feel loved, followed by some crying to show off that she has the full set of proper female emotions, followed by some pointless self sacrifice and a deluge of more emotions rammed down everyone's throats to make them feel bad, followed by some more tears.

Wait, that's what chickflicks are? Awwww I don't want to watch that sort of thing!

Sorry to be a self-absorbed Baby Boomer, but did you ever check out Mimi wo Sumaseba (which I recommended earlier)? I think most women would find this hard to resist but it also appeals to nerds. I think it's relatively well known in the US, it is occasionally exhibited in actual cinemas.

I think the problem could be that her English isn't very good. I showed her one of my favourite movies, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. She hated it so much she went to bed even though it was only 8 o'clock.

I asked her why she didn't like it and she said it was because she couldn't understand what they were saying. I think Monty Python humour requires a fairly good understanding of the language.

I was just about ready to give up on this when her old landlord said it's important for her to watch movies to help her English. As I said before she likes romance movies. The closest thing I have is I Dream of Jeannie. I put season 1 on. She seems to like it.

I told you Monty Python was a bad choice. It's too obscure for even most English-speaking people.

Have you guys watched the Princess Bride? What about Labyrinth? (okay not a romance movie but still well-liked by most)

A great chick-and-guy flick: "Finding Nemo."

 This whole thread has been quite amusing.. I just skimmed it now & it's chock full of recommendations of movies that would be GREAT to watch with your guy friends, not so much "date movies," that females enjoy.

Also, I was a bit surprised to not see THE most often recommended "date movie," ever make anyone's recommendation list so far.. it was such a common date movie that it even had a bit of a pop-culture phrase coined after it as people would say that nothing compares to "Notebook sex," as the movie would, apparently, get women in the emotional state of mind that made them want to have fantastic sex with their partners.

Oi vey

I guess it's kind of the safest date night movie to watch, maybe...

It was kind of weird. When I watched this movie I thought "You know...a lot of this kind of doesn't make any sense, but I guess I'll just roll with it" and it was kind of enjoyable but the more I think about this movie...like, it's a really creepy, stalkery kind of movie.

I see that your girlfriend is Chinese. This is interesting because I live in China and I've had a relationship with a Chinese girl and I'm also currently seeing another Chinese girl.

One thing, I don't know how you're watching these movies, but we watch movies on my laptop and I'd always try to find Chinese subtitles for the movie. You can google them and download the SRT file. Having said that, these subtitles usually go along with the pirated copies I find on the internet(I live in China. It's the only way I'll be able to access a lot of the movies I want to watch here). So, keep that in mind when trying to find the subtitles. Though, another thing is that I think some blu-ray copies of movies have Chinese subtitles for some movies. I watched Big Trouble in Little China with my ex-girlfriend and it happened to have the Mandarin subtitles on it...

Also, maybe I can recommend Big Trouble in Little China, but, to be honest, I wasn't really sure how she felt about that movie. She didn't have much to say about it afterwards, haha

Back to the Future has probably been the most successful so far, but it looks like you already showed her Part II, so I think I can assume you've already shown her the first one.

My ex also told me her favorite movie we watched together was Fantastic Mr. Fox. It's my favorite movie so I was going to show her it some time. I'm glad she liked it. I think your girlfriend will like it too.

With the girl I'm seeing now, we watched Solo together when it was in the cinema. Maybe you can still watch it where you live. We both had a blast with that movie.

Also, you could surprise her with a Chinese movie. The one movie that seems like is a classic here is Journey to the West though it's called A Chinese Odyssey in English. Part II is the one that seems to be the most famous, nobody talks about the first part here. I'm curious to see what someone else would think about this film too because it's...it's something else. It's also a romance film that kind of promotes stalkerish behavior but there's also some decentish kung-fu action and there's a scene where the main character blasts away the bad guys by farting at them(I'm not making this up. I think it was supposed to be played completely straight because I was the only person in the theater who laughed at that part).

Other people seemed to have already recommended a lot of good movies, so I don't think I need to say more. But, if you really want to surprise her, see if you can find A Chinese Odyssey Part II starring Stephen Chow.

Oh. I forgot.

Being Chinese I thought she'd like the part at the beginning where they satirise socialist collectives and the legitimacy of the rule of kings but it turns out she doesn't really understand political satire.[/quote]

She would love the Princess Bride! Especially the kissing parts!

Yes I tried that several times but the SRT files always contain traditional Chinese. That would be fine if she was from Hong Kong or Taiwan but being a Mandarin speaker from the Mainland she needs simplified Chinese and I can't find any simplified Chinese SRTs.

That's interesting. I realized that they're usually traditional but that hasn't been a problem so far because they seemed to be have familiar with both.

One thing you can try is that there is this Chinese website called iqiyi.com. I'm not entirely sure if you can use it in your country but you can see. You might need to pay for some movies I think, I'm not sure though. You can even find Rick and Morty with Chinese subtitles if you're brave enough to show that show(it does kind of have a cult following in China and I'm surprised to find out which people are fans of that show. I know more than one Chinese girl who's liked it).

It's in Chinese but, that's okay, just use the search bar and typing in the English title should be okay.

You can also try youku.com, but I've had less luck with that site.

At first I thought she only likes feminine movies. However tonight we watched a James Bond movie and to my surprise she really enjoyed it.

I usually will just go with anything she is into because me personally, I don't care what's playing, just the time with her satisfies me

Her tastes are still a mystery to me. Her new favourite obsession is a show called Lucifer, which as far as I can work out is a show about a detective who is also the devil.

She also seems to be interested in my Futurama DVDs but I don't think she gets all the jokes.
