as far as I know some people in high school liked to appear quirky by saying things like "i like turtles" but it's a cliché and they don't actually know anything about them except how they look like

It’s a non-response to questions they think are stupid. Or to people they think are beneath them.
M: ...ok, wow! That’s really interesting. How about we meet for lunch and we can talk about this some more?
F: I like turtles.
Translation: fat chance.
M: Oh, I know a place that makes great grilled turtles!
Yeah...ok, that would follow my usual pattern and that is exactly the kind of remark I’d NORMALLY suggest. But the problem is I happen to already know “I like turtles” is just another way of saying “piss off.”
Kinda like when someone says “It was so nice meeting you.” Translation: Stop talking and leave now.
Have a nice day, AngelRho.
You, too, Boo. And don’t let the door hit your @$$ on the way out!

I really do wish there was some kind of dictionary of little hints like that. “I like turtles” is not nice.
When I was little, the old folks I knew ended conversations or visits like this:
#1: well, I hate to rush off, but...
#2: aw, what’s your hurry?
#3: well, you know my wife hurt her back the other day, and...
Translation:
#1: I’ve worn out my welcome
#2: Yes, you have.
#3: I’m making an excuse to leave so I don't have to embarrass myself and you don’t have to be rude.
People where I live are known for being some of the most polite people in the United States. That’s half the charm of being a Southerner. The subtext is much less pretty. Northerners tend to be more direct and often find our manners disingenuous. Southerners miss Northerner sarcasm and label all of them rude.
The “turtles” thing is funny to them because they are in on the joke and you aren’t. It’s not exactly something they can explain to you in a way you’d understand, plus it’s funnier if you just stay clueless.
What I would do is find sympathetic people who I could trust to clue me in. It didn’t always work. But the few times someone could tell me “hey, she’s being a b¡+¢#. Keep your distance” I found it was a big help.

oh tell me about it! i used to live in southern England and people rarely mean what they say! so many people who i thought were my friends who were just "polite" with me. or people who weren't polite with me but i never rly got it (probably a good thing ahaha)

now that i live in scotland i find Scottish humour much better - less subtle and more using stories and examples rather than plain dry humour. the scots are also great at sarcasm and will use a great deal of inflection when making sarcastic comments so i know what's happening! the southerners are far too subtle for my taste.
