I drive to Austin whenever I get the itch to do so. I just still struggle socially even when I am there. I wonder if the fact I don’t live there makes people consider that a deal breaker for even platonic friendships.

Just try not to miss it if a social person offers you inclusion.
It may not be the ideal group, you may feel an oddball in it, you may not get any dates, but it's the easieest way I know to work on your own social network.

I fear that people want friends less as the years go on. I am too old for the 20’s crowd and too young for the 40’s and above crowds so I am the odd man out wherever I go.

"Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter."
I socialized with 20-30yos when I was in high school. My close friend and his father enjoy the same events together.

I would probably feel safer with the older group but that may be just me, I genuinely enjoy aging.

^ Also, lots of people are in their 30’s, roughly the same number as are in their 20’s or 40’s. :P

Anyway, we can be friends with people from different age groups and backgrounds who have different beliefs than our own. You might just need to avoid talking about politics or religion.

I fear that the people I encounter in my daily life think I am a loser for being single and they don’t want me to have one.

You mean people from your town? Why would their opinions matter?

Yes and I can’t prove them wrong so their opinions hurt me.

That probably makes me fit WP better.
But really, the older I get, the less I care for what other people think and this feeling is GREAT!

Well, we will see how you'll think after few years! After starting to have white hair and back ashes.

I do have some white hair.
My back problems have been there since I was 8.
Of course deteriorating health is not something to look forward but for now it's been totally worth it!

I wish I could stay my present age. Oh well. I wouldn’t want to go back and relive my teens or 20’s anyway unless I could take my current experience with me.

I wish I had been aborted if I knew my life was going to be a spiral of failure.

I think we all know which character from Winnie the Pooh that you’d be.

Life could be worse. You could’ve been born a dung beetle. I think that would be much more unpleasant.

You're less weird than you think - I'm roughly twice your age and feel the same. And we're not the only ones, it's something I've seen with a surprising amount of people over the years: it's incredibly liberating for those who can let go and start living out of the terror of "what would people think?" :thumright:

Some of them even changed their lives in rather... spectacular ways in their '40s or '50s and achieved a kind of freedom and happiness they never dreamed possible :)

I care about what my wife and my boss think, and that's about it. Not everybody. Not nobody. Just those two important people, and only because I choose to care. The rest are unimportant.
