It's manipulative. It's a bit like tit-for-tat in that you only do things because you expect things in return. The thinking typically is that if I follow method X or Y, it will result in Z, and I like Z so I flatter somebody with X or Y. That's why flattery is fake. Real flirting is completely without expectations, otherwise, it's fake.

I don't think it is exactly like that it operates in the NT world. Rather, having an attractive partner gives you higher status so you can climb the hierarchy. Similarly, if a NT woman finds a man that has access to many resources it makes her rise in the hierarchy and she gets higher status. It's not a coincidence that NTs desire qualities that makes them rise in the hierarchy and gain higher status. It's part of their social programming.

I don't think it operates that way for many NDs. I like attractive women, but they typically make me shy and nervous, and I wouldn't even dream about trying to have one as a trophy wife.
