Hello Chris :o) Thanks for replying If there are plenty of guys- or gals with AS in staten island, they are either un knowledgeable of their condition, in denial or embarassed of their condition, or not seeking support groups or freindship online or on island. I met several AS folks in the island's only support group, and as i mentioned in my last post they were lower functioning. They were very nice people. They were amazed that i was able to drive, care for myself and a child, follow a daily routine, ect... they had never met somone like myself..the therapist included.
There is nothing else here for AS adults, though a small movment is starting to form to help kids..i have met parents of other AS kids from my sons school/class but only see them at the schools monthly A.S. Parents meeting. I am the only single parent there and felt akward having to tell my story of why i had to leave my husband 6 years ago..
The lonienss / isolation and the resulting depression caused from it is making me nuts. I drive and would even be willing to date somone that lived as far as Hazlet NJ..if somone exists that is.
I am truly on an island in more ways than one..

Thanks 8) you're a sweetheart! only problem is im afraid to go to the city alone ..im a nurvous wreck by the time i get there..i cant deal well with public transportation...i have to walk 10 miniutes or so to my local train station..which isnt bad..but when i get down on the platform the waiting starts and the anxiety rises..i get on the train and its a 30 miniute trip to the ferry boat. then waiting for the ferry at the terminal till it gets there.. the ferry is like 30 to 45 miniutes to Manhattan. Then from there its a bus or subway to Broadway. by then im in a panicky emotional shambles. i had a freind who died about 7 years ago. we would go to the city together on PT and it wasnt too bad because i was with somone.. its wierd... i cant drive into manhattan either. the city just makes me edgy.

That's too bad, but I know how you feel. Uuuh, if I didn't care about getting in trouble, I would send you some Valium. :P

If you have such bad anxiety in public situations, have you thought about going on a benzo of some kind?

Kind regards,
Chris

okay..not sure if i am doing this correctly..but here goes. i just joined this site, Im a 37 year old lady living in Staten Island New York. I was dianosed with high functioning AS and above average IQ 3 years ago. I do not smoke, drink or take drugs. I am of Austrian/German/Italian decent. I am a freelacne artist and my interests include my son, art, ,science, nature, animals, fish, plants, zoos, museums, cooking, baking and making historical miniatures. I am no longer married (single) and have a 5 year old. Much to my great dismay, he was diagnosed with AS last year.
I am looking to meet aspies in my area who have similar interests as myself.

Isn't it odd that there doesn't seem to be anyone older than, perhaps, 35 on this board, and that most seem be be much younger? (Not a bad thing, just odd.)

Its not all public situations.. i get a wee bit uncormfortable in the mall at holiday season or a crowded elevator, but i think that is normal for any person. i deal with it .
i only have a real problem when i have to take public transportartion to the city. its just the city that does a job on me..
i can drive any where in my car..i am in control when i drive..no waiting, go where i please and when i please.. i even go to places such as Coney Island..which is considered a sort of 'tough' neighborhood..with no problem, walk around, get a hot dog at Nathans and enjoy the ocean view. its just that train and boat ride to the city (M anhattan)that unwinds me..

I am 37 and will be 38 in July.
its not only here, the age differeance..i see it on whatever AS site or dating site for AS that ive been browsing about on. for some reason, there arent many folks in their mid or late 30s posting on AS sites...perhaps because more younger people are being diagnosed now with AS as awareness of AS rises in the medical comunity? i walked around for the first 34 years of my life believing i was 'normal' and just unlucky in life..until one day i read a posting in a doctors office waiting room about AS ...it soundesd like me .. i was found to have AS after years of being mis diagnosed as 'depressed'...

in an ideal world, there'd be an educated (formal or self-taught) man who was soft-spoken, knows himself, was comfortable in his own skin. a basically happy person.

someone who didn't care for crowds or noisey places. someone who didn't need to be the center of attention. and didn't want me to have to be, either.

someone who enjoyed creating things. music, or writing, or a craft. gardening. painting. photography. and accepted and enjoyed the work of others.

***** i couldnt have said it better myself. if i were to write a 'want ad' for a potential mate, it would have read similar to what you just posted..
Ive been looking for this exact man too, all of my life. :( along my road of life i thought that i had found this very man but it turned out to not be my 'Mr. Right'...

I hope we both can find a man like this.

There are people who are 60 and up actually. You just have to find out who they are.
