We also have something in common!

I am 1/2 Japanese, 3/8 Italian, and 1/8 Native American.

Ooh nice, I speak both Japanese and Italian.

I never did learn Italian. My grandmother was fluent, but never saw the need to teach any of us. The only European language I know is French. I am lazy about learning Kanji (bad, I know), mostly because I turned my attention to Korean. It's my favorite language right now. I'd like to learn some Mandarin, too.
I know a little bit of Japanese but small bits and peices my main language I have been focusing on and am semi fluent in is Mandarin! I dont really know cantonese either! To say I really like you in Japanese one can say 大好きだよ thats the most I know though heh!

Ooh, I speak Mandarin and cantonese too. Cantonese is probably the hardest one to learn. I only know a bit of Korean, but I can't read it :/

It was pretty easy at least for me anyway at first I ignored the characters and paid attention to it verbally and written in pinyin then got the tones down! The focused on the Hakka later! Also after moving to an area with a large Mandarin speaking community I can mimic their pronounciation perfectly I think it might be to my echolalia!

I tried before, when I was in Taiwan, but found it impossible. Syllables do not end in consonants (except for -n and -ng), so, unless you get the tones absolutely right, no-one can figure out what you are trying to say. You really have to sing it.

Thai is also a tonal language, but syllables can end in a variety of consonants. So, even if you get the tone wrong, they can often figure out what you are trying to say,. With Mandarin, you don't have the luxury of a consonant to hang your hat on.

My sensei told us that to say "愛してる" (ai shiteru) you have to be very serious about the person you are saying it to.

Japanese RARELY say that. Saying "I love you" is used very sparingly. It's pretty sacred, even if you have gone out for awhile. It's not just thrown around like in the West; the situation should be very very special to earn those words. My ex and I probably said that four times in our entire 3 year relationship.

I'm a singer and my speaking voice makes it obvious, so maybe I should give it a try!
