Yes I am against marriage. Marriage is a coercive institution in which some good-looking but aggressive men have all the power.

I dont nessarily wish that it didnt exist, I just wish their wasnt so much dang hype around it. All these romantized ideals that just lead people to dissapointment cause they cant find their "one" like people in movies do. And theres some of us who just arent attractive for s**t in real life for whatever reason. Theres the whole dating "game" which is ridiculous. By all means, I dont want to have arranged marriages or anything. I wish we could all be asexual, no romantized ideals, no roles in male female interaction, no pressure, etc. I almost feel that my mom is starting to put "subtle" pressure on me when she starts all her dumb stories about so and so having a bf. Its like hint, hint.

I think dating is essential in getting to know if you even like him/her, which let's you know if you two are compatible. On the other hand, marriage, to me, is pointless. Two people need not tie a knot to stay faithful. Marriage, by definition, is the state of being united to a person of the opposite or same sex in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law. Nevertheless, this concept cannot magically keep love and sex between the couple, can it? Many relationships, marriage or not, have and will faulter. And remember, lots of money will be lost trying to break a marriage and rip the license in half. Then there's custody of the children. And the court decides your parental fate. In my view, marriage should not exist. It should be up to the couples to decide their own futures. Work out your issues or he can pack his bags and they work out their own custody arrangement.

It would be interesting to have a system where marriage contracts were annulled by default after 12 months unless both parties signed a declaration of satisfaction. But they'd probably charge an annual fee for it.

i guess i am glad that "dating" and "marriage" exists because it keeps people off the streets and out of my way (to a degree(people at the supermarket buying nappies (diapers) are among the exceptions)).

That's a good idea, actually. Make them like 12 month phone contracts: you have to renew them every year, and they expire if you don't. Makes more sense in the real world than the current system IMO.

I don't think it'll happen though. The gov is in a panic about the demise of marriage, and last time I looked it was considering bribing married couples with tax breaks. I think the reason is that a guy with a traditional marriage, and pressure to be the main breadwinner etc., is likely to be more scared of losing his job, so wages can be more easily kept below the value of the labour carried out. Employers like men to be married - I don't see why they'd ask their marital status otherwise, as it's clearly none of their business.

Yeah, the emphasis society puts on marriage is stupid, and the 12 month system will probably never happen. Shame.
