Best cheap date I ever had was on my 20th birthday. The guy I was dating had gotten laid off and totaled his car the week before, plus we were both students, so I knew he didn't have money to spend and told him I just wanted a nice night in and to spend time together.

I walked into his apartment and he'd managed to turn it into a 'tropical paradise,' lol. He'd gotten a ton of cardboard and paint from a friend to make 'palm trees,' borrowed a tarp and a few bags of sand from a neighbor to make a 'beach' in the living room, went to the Dollar store down the street to get lais and little tiki candles, borrowed a CD of luau music, baked a coconut-pineapple birthday cake and answered the door wearing a Hawaiian shirt, swim trunks and flip-flops. (Bear in mind, it was the middle of March in Pennsylvania and there was about a foot and a half of snow on the ground).

It was just a birthday cake and a night in, but it was a really fun night in. I think he only spent about $10 on it, but I will always remember that. All you need is a little creativity and to care about someone and you can come up with something fun.

 awwwwwwww. i've tried to convince myself i am not romantic, but my reaction to posts like this expose me as a liar!

Aw! You took the words right out of my mouth.

I met a guy once who was sorta smitten with me, but, too shy to approach me directly (according to his brother, he was self-conscious about being short and balding), so, he drove out to the university I was attending and left some flowers from his garden on my windshield while I was in class.
After the 2nd time this happened, he heard me gushing to my girlfriend about it and told me they were from him. Neither one of us were flush with cash, so we mostly just hung out with friends sharing a lot of laughs or cruised around in our cars enjoying the scenery. But, at least once a week, he'd drive out to wherever I was and leave a flower with a little something else... a drawing, a poem, a little toy he thought I'd find amusing.
This wasn't a small feat, as my jobs and school and apartment were scattered in four towns in two counties.

~smiles~ He sure was sweet.

romance was wasted on me when i was young... not just due to aspieness or something, but i had such low self-esteem i didn't think it was worth it. now i understand it better and i just melt.

That is so funny you mention that. The luau guy and I met while working in a greenhouse; he was going to school for horticulture at the time and we both loved flowers. I used to leave hand-picked flowers and notes on his windshield all the time and he'd reciprocate. Both of us were working full time, plus going to different schools, so seeing each other outside of work, where we had to act 'professional,' was tough and that was how we'd keep in touch during weeks we couldn't see each other much.

Wouldn't this sort of depend on whether or not you were a decent cook? Also, the type of dish you'd cook would have to be quite specific to the circumstances - so you might want to go a bit more advenuruous than you normally would. Having said that, some people like simple.

I have never been a big fan of chips (although I love any kind of fish)... but, one of my favorite memories of dating with my husband is when we spent a long weekend in Ireland and grabbed some chips and ate them while sitting on the rocks and grass.[/quote]

Some cracking chippers in Ireland. Mmm. Though I'm more of a champ sort of a bloke. :)

Not to mention, I kind of lump this in with the cautions about hiking. Home-cooked dinner (in my home) happens once I feel comfortable and not threatened. Home-cooked dinner in his house happens once he brings his kitchen up to code...

Champ? :-)

You know one thing I really do miss from my visits to England? Marks and Spencers. Mainly their sandwiches.

It's hard enough finding a decent sandwich here for take away, but at a decent price is harder. Completely impossible is finding something as tasty as a caramelized carrot chutney with wensleydale. Nom.

Champ is mashed potato mixed with spring onions or chives. I love the stuff. Very similar to colcannon, which is mashed potato mixed with cabbage. It's very heavy stuff and lovely with a bit of gammon.

Outside the UK and the British Crown Dependencies of Guernsey and Jersey plus the overseas territories of Bermuda and Gibraltar (I've been to the one in Gib when I was there for National Day a few years back - very cramped and expensive!), M&S have international branches in the following countries:

Yes, they are very good.

Honestly? I'm surprised at this; many shops here in the UK do decent sandwiches for takeaway - in fact, at budget chains like Aldi you can pick one up for about a quid.

For what it's worth, smudge, that guy later broke my heart and dumped me in grand fashion a few weeks before our wedding date, so ...

You know, when I first read the title of this thread, I thought it was going to be about how to pick up loose women or something, lol.
