I am judged like this all the time. I am a Republican, but have started voting Libertarian so people won't assume I am some bigoted hatemonger who only cares about the super-rich.

However, many of the people who have the same interests as me tend to have far-left political views, and are often in the "artsy hipster" category.

The hipster subculture is associated with:

1. independent music
2. Apple products
3. a varied non-mainstream fashion sensibility
4. liberal or independent political views
5. alternative spirituality or atheism/agnosticism
6. alternative lifestyles.
7. independent film
8. magazines such as Clash
9. websites like Pitchfork Media, UrbFash, and various parts of Tumblr.

I am only associated with #1, #2, and #7. Maybe #6 by Texas standards, because of my extreme willingness to experiment in the bedroom.

I have never heard of #8 or #9.

If I end up in a relationship with a similarly artsy, avant-garde, postmodern gal (but who is also a Christian and a Republican), I would die a happy man.

You know, in a way I'm the opposite (leftist politically, conservative lifestyle-wise), and so can relate.
I'm leftist (anarchist, communist, radical feminist, vegan, etc) but find myself isolated from those who might be similar because I don't smoke/drink/do drugs, don't dress in any conspicuous way, consider myself naturally-monogamous romantically and asexual (not a sexual prude, but much closer to it than the libertine sexual mores that are en vogue with the liberal set). I want marriage and children and all that.
Ideologically, I'm the stuff of Republican scare tactics, but I feel even more alienated from leftists because of all those things that actually make up daily life.

We had an interesting case here in germany recently which is related to the topic:
One of the German athletes withdrew/was urged to withdraw from the olympic team because her husband/longtime BF (don't know which) is a radical and influential person in the new Nazi party. The discussion is mainly about wether she can be heald accountable for her significant other's views.

I think she can because you can't be in a relationship with someone if you don't at least somewhat approve of his/her views. And the Nazi in question is a true radical - openly approving of killings and openly harrassing mourners at funerals of nazi victims.

I'm apolitical. To me all the parties are the same, they need each other, they need an alternation in the government to revitalize the motivation to vote and to play with the emotions of the people.

If a potential partner is a Democrat, it isn't a dealbreaker. But most other Christians think my interests are evil, and to them, watching animated sitcoms and indie films is as bad as watching porn. Granted there probably are some who have the same interests, but finding one is very unlikely. I guess I am doomed to be with someone who will repeatedly condemn my interests, and who think any sex outside of marriage or not for procreation is evil, and who probably hates traveling.

I'm exactly like this too (except I'm not vegan, was almost vegan for a long time, but never quite there). My husband is the same. We found one another without trying too hard. I think, in our case, similar attracts.

I've met and dated a lot of women this year, and one thing that I believe has absolutely no place in relationships is politics. Sure, it's nice to have the same political beliefs so you can have fun knocking public officials that you don't like or don't agree with their policies, but chances are you're going to run into people who have different political beliefs than your own, and in that case it's best to keep silent about politics or when it comes up, IMMEDIATELY change the subject.

Some of the women I've gone out on get-togethers with or just met online were so adamant and vocal about their political beliefs that if you disagreed even in the slightest, you were done for. This is much more common with left-wing liberal women. Sure, there are some right-wing women who do the same, particularly those within religious circles who like to believe their sect of Christianity is superior to yours, but I find that women of the very liberal mindset who are into politics are very closed minded and assume a bunch of things about you if, say for example, you are anti-abortion or if you are against government-run health care (i.e. racist, nazi).

Honestly, I think your making a mistake by not discussing it. If the person is passionate about politics, and there politics are very different it probably will not work out in the end.
