Forget about self-esteem on this. It's a lever to make material improvements - which could be argued lead to improved self-esteem in themselves (I am who I am with, I am my job etc etc.) And, when one is rock bottom, any plan can be a good plan.
Sounds quite NT, in many ways. A middle-class hatred of the underclass, for instance, simply to prevent them ever sinking low.
