In your picture you look like you have a heavy build (not heavy as in fat). Girls like a guy with a big frame (fat guys don't have a big frame, just lots of fat stuck to a small frame. Girls like that broad shouldered look.
If you really want to lose weight (and I don't think you have much need but as you said, it's not a full body pic) remember that weight loss is possible for anyone. I submit myself as an example Here's my "before" picture. For the "after" picture see the previous page.

As you say, it's a defense mechanism like "I'd better not describe the true extent of my talents incase I screw up straight afterwards or someone better at it comes along after". It's like a type of insurance.
