I think people should be moral and respectful enough to stay with their partner without the need for marriage to officially bind them. Marriage does make categorizing things more easier by the government though (for giving out money, census etc.).

The ceremony itself reminds me of someone waving around a trophy and gloating over it.

It's not. I never said that. I can have a relationship, love someone, remain with them for the rest of my life. I don't need a ceremony or piece of paper to make it any more significant though.

I feel the same way. If you find that someone special, why should you have to have the government or some religious organization validate your commitment? It truly is archaic.

On the other hand, since there do exist such rules, I am appalled at the direction this country has gone in removing these rights from certain individuals. My state just banned same-sex marriage and removed all rights to domestic partners. They cleverly stuck in that language, knowing their conservative base would want to "get those gays!" As a firm believer in EQUAL RIGHTS UNDER THE LAW, I am dumbfounded that this has become the battle cry in this country for the very powerful religious conservatives. These people are nothing but bigots, hiding behind their ancient dogmatic beliefs. I was brought up to believe this kind of thing was unconstitutional.

Meanwhile children are starving and dying all over the world, and we are wasting money on campaign lobbying to "get those gays!"
