Newsflash: You don't have to have kids to buy the toys!

Good thing too, or I wouldn't have my prime collection of pre-1980 Archie comics digests.

It's not illogical to want to have children.

No? Well, explain then, because I've never gotten the whole "have a kid" thing.

The only part of it that makes sense to me is, "you'll have someone there for you when you're old". Which isn't good enough for me -- it smacks of those old science fiction movies where the mad scientist says, "I will create an army of slaves to do my bidding!"

If there's more to it than that - and I mean in terms of LOGIC, not the biological drive to perpetuate the species, or the desire to create people who'll love you the way people only love their mommies and daddies - then clue me in!

Most people have kids for selfish reasons really, they want them because they grow up in a society where most people leave school, leave home, get a job, get married, have kids. And a lot of them (particularly young people) like the idea of having a little baby to look after. Gives them some meaning to their lives.

Nope. Merely selfish, if one sees
the world as fundamentally evil
as I do.

I don't know how much logic there is in these desires... but I can see how they exist outside of pure biological reasons.

If you have a desire to create something truly unique (unique in the sense that it won't be like anybody else... obviously there are many children out there) then having a child seems like a fine desire.

Raising something that is ultimately a benefit to society... to be able to care and raise that. Nothing seems illogical about that...

People are only a drain on society for their first years... eventually they can grow and give back more than what they took initially.

Children can surprise you with their creativity... if your child makes something that you could never make... but still know that in some way you helped... that seems like a good desire.

Still all fundamentally selfish.

Put MY stamp out on the world.

MY kid, the doctor.

Aye, but again, someone else
will do it anyway. No reason to
be part of the problem.

See the first answer.

Meh, so what. If it's selfish... but still creates something good then I have no problem with that.

If someone who has a successful company that provides a needed service to the world... does it for selfish means... there's no wrong done.

As someone dear to me is dying, the desire to create life is growing even stronger.

There are probably those who are just giving by nature... those who just want to create a life so they can care for it... and give all of themselves. I am not that giving... but I believe there are people out there who do have this personality... and there is nothing wrong with them wanting to satisfy that need.

I don't agree that creating more humans is a good thing.

There are already far too many.

And most of them are a drain as long as they live, as far as I can see.

There are plenty of children waiting for adoptive homes.

I really don't think I'll ever want children... if I every marry then I'll have to make sure my partner doesn't want them either. But then I'd know about that before marrying.

Are people really that big of a drain?

I don't think the human race would have survived if the vast majority of us are a drain on society.

It seems like most people produce more than they take in...

Obviously. The drain is humanity and society.
