I think equality and having a mutual understanding to achieve a common goal are two of the most important things, I think when you have a serious relationship or marriage, you have to trust it as a marriage rather than two independent people being together. You have to make decisions, compromises and face realities when it comes to challenges and obstacles you need to overcome.
I think generally there are different types of compatibility and they can range from the compatibility of living together to sexual needs to the level of emotional needs a person requires. I think it's best to find someone you are most compatible with in all of these areas, although you may have to compromise in some areas.
