They're stouts but are extremely strong, complex, heavy versions of stouts. So they have many different flavours that mix and intertwine with one another that take considerable practice to oversee. Think of them as like a fine wine, or a good whisky, more than just a typical beer. Something to sip after a good meal with a cigar if you're an Evil Smoker™.
They tend to be jet black, thick, strong, and powerful. Generally they start at 8% ABV and go up from there. Samuel Smiths Imperial Stout is 7% and is one of the most moderate Imperial stouts.
You never glug an imperial stout because that's just wasting it. The flavours are so intense and multi-layered that it really takes time to detect them all.
