Tony Porter's - "A Call to Men".

Feel free to start one but expect to take a lot of heat for it.
He covers a lot of great stuff in there, but in some places he only skims the correlation and does not go into the true underlying causes - in which case would alter conclusion dramatically.

I'm actually quite tempted to start that topic because I'd be interested to see what everyone thought of that talk, but I think the L&D subforum really doesn't need any more flamebait at the moment.

I think that's the problem with it. When you're raised with it, even if you try to let it go, it's incredibly hard to let contructs that are constantly shoved down our throats from the day we are born and think that it will somehow not affect us. From the moment that babies have just been born, the parents treat them differently based on gender. It's hard to let go of all of it when you absorb it at such a young age that you have no skills to combat it and therefore seriously affects the way we think, and on top of that is enforced by the majority.

Absolutely- I'm feminist to the core of my being, yet still struggle personally with things like beauty norms, etc.

I would have to know what made him upset to gage the situation. If there was anything practical I could do to resolve it, I would do it. Otherwise, I would give him a marzipan treat (he loves marzipan) and put on his favourite song or comedy show. Oh, and hold his hand.

..depends what made him cry...I have far more respect for a guy who feels comfortable expressing his emotions.....and it can be sweet if he also feels comfortable sharing it with me. I've seen macho guys break down. Doesn't mean their not strong and manly, just means they can express those feelings instead of bottling it up and then turning into a ragaholic instead. But if its fake emotion over something stupid in an attempt to get my attention...?... even I(!) think that is creepy/lame. ; )

Would I be hugged, if I cried out of ranting how the world was cruel to me? Hmm....

I'm strongly empathetic and tend to end up crying too. And then we hug and share the love until we forget the world. And then...... ;-)

I wonder, if any woman would hug me if I sobbed....?

I'd find it rather touching. It's just another one of those things that happen where you discover and learn about them; I'm always quite emotionally curious about people and I like imagining how they would be when experiencing any variety of emotions, but I'm a weird starved kinda person. Their emotional side may be a close and personal side that they don't exactly show to everyone so it'd be special too.

This is all assuming I'm not the one making them cry. Otherwise I have no idea what to do.

Is that what your boyfriend does? If she did that to me then I'd return the favor by socking her in the mouth next time she cries and then exclaim: "Shut up, woman! Or I'll REALLY give you something to cry about!"
