Many parents work their asses off so their kids can pursue their passions. It’s often not about being wealthy. Although she competed at a high level, my friend’s family wasn’t wealthy, and she didn’t end up marrying someone who was.

In Australia golf is a rich man's sport

It’s considered a rich man’s sport here, too, but parents sometimes find a way even if it means doing without in some ways. There is also funding and scholarships if you know where to look for them.

And a rich woman's sport, I presume.

Of course it's classist as my daughter pointed out.
I don't think many inner-city kids get an opportunity to even try.

I've played 9 and 18 holes, and lots of mini golf.
I totally suck at it, but I don't care if someone else likes it.

You can play without joining a club.

I struggle with mini-golf. Never actually played real golf.

My archery club had a charity competition against the local golf club every year.
We always won :D

I got to run through the Brazilian rainforest shooting targets in the archery orienteering event in the World Nature Games.
On the night of my birthday I was staying at the Mabu Thermas in Foz do Iguacu. I was lying under a hot waterfall when I noticed it was mating season for a giant beetle. These things filled my hand with their wings tucked away, but were the least scary insects I've ever seen ! It was like holding a clockwork toy.
I had to rescue quite a few from the waterfall/pool/canal (which was all pool and had a bar)
Awesome night in an awesome hotel.

I am an archer too! I mostly use a compound bow because my upper body strength is weak. I should work on improving that.

My main hobbies are unisex, rather than being typically male (I think video games as a hobby counts as unisex nowadays)? Books are obviously for any sex and so is walking?

I'm not really into any of the male dominated sports, either participating or spectating, although I make an exception for watching English international football (soccer).

Mini-golf looks way more fun than golf honestly.

Golf has too much walking to be a good game, and just enough game to spoil a good walk.

It’s better than hunting. Hunting is a nice hike in the woods interspersed with killing stuff.

I’ve never played actual golf - just mini golf, and I’m very bad at it.

But golf doesn't lead to a freezer full of venison. :nerdy:

Meh. Bambi spoiled venison for me. I prefer deer alive and being stupid.

The first guy I dated hunted. Most families I grew up with did. But I don’t like guns or the idea of killing stuff for fun.

I prefer deer populations to not become excessively dense.
Predation contributes to checking population growth.

The alternative is far worse.

Not even Nokotan could ruin venison.

I’m not into the notion of killing stuff = fun hobby (although fishing doesn’t typically bother me) or the fact that guns are owned by laypeople. It leads to a lot of accidental deaths every year, especially involving children. I’d be okay with a program in which rangers are paid to hunt and then sell the meat, but in terms of unattractive hobbies, hunting is really high up there for me.

I wouldn’t buy venison because I don’t like it that much. I’m not a big meat person.
