by how the opposite sex says to you or behaves around you.

Trust me, I was unattractive and now more attractive (before vs after reactions), the difference is huge.

To answer:
by applying your aesthetic ideals to one's self
Ex: I prefer wild sweeping curves over sharp angles, so I like that I'm very curvy as opposed to thin-framed.
I like pale people because it stands out when so many people seem determined to look like overdone chicken, so I like that about myself.
I like height, because it seems to have more practical use than being short, so at 5'1", I didn't win on that count.

Etc.

Anyone with flaming red hair who quotes Elton John lyrics is okay in my book.

My red hair is turning gray, but I still quote Elton John lyrics from time to time, so I am only about half as attractive as you.

Maybe the EJ quotes are more important?

I scanned six pages of answers and was surprised no one mentioned what I consider the Absolute Truth:

1) when women rate the attractiveness of men, they're all over the map. I've had beautiful women make gaga eyes at me while less beautiful women pass me with a dismissive sniff (I believe I am average looking). I've had unattractive women sigh in pleasure as I entered a room while more attractive women gave me one quick dismissive look. Men on the other hand are pretty consistent. If John says that Sarah is a 9 on a scale of 1-10, then it's a good bet that Andy will rate Sarah between 8-10.

2) any women who is height/weight proportionate is at least cute. It is not possible for a height/weight proportionate woman to be unattractive. For heavier women, some women can pull it off and some can't.

I'd LOVE to live where you live then. Every woman scowls at me pretty much. I don't even have to look at them.

In my experience, It's the case for men and women. A hot guy is usually seen hot by a majority of women.

As boo says there are certain things that are considered to be attractive for both genders.
Its not a coincidence that many of the people in Hollywood for example look very similar(they work hard on achieving this, to the point of imitating each others hairstyle when it comes to female actresses)
And it is not a coincidence that many of the males that are meant to be hot look extremely similar.
As a matter of fact I recall that one of the many complaints many females had about the original Millenium movies was that the main actor looked average and he was supposed to be good looking on the books.
Im not kidding on this one, saw it on several sites when I was looking for a review(apparently it was considered to be that important) and it was the very first thing my mother said after watching the movie("there are so many good looking males on Sweden why did they pick him").

I heard the same comments when the character Aragorn appeared for the first time in The Lord of the Rings.

The problem with men like Walkingthedog (are you DogsWithoutHorses' boyfriend btw?) is that they idealize women by making them sound as the "Less shallow" gender or the "more-personality-caring and more looks-indifferent gender".

This is a very delusional view on women and honestly it's plain untrue and BS.

No gender is better, and women aren't really less shallow and more-personality caring than men - this is just a fat greasy lie (think of a butter) that the media, the PUA (to sell their books) and many women (to make themselves sound better) keep telling you.

And I am talking as a guy who went from the bottom-of-the-barrel (attractiveness-wise) realm to the hotness realm - and yea, you either attract a majority of women (current state) or it's zero (like it was my case in my entire 3 decades of life).

What changes did you make, Boo? :)

Good looks makes it easier to get laid, but it won't guarantee you a relationship. All the girls that have slept with me have told me that I'm good-looking, but many were downright nasty about my Asperger's related issues afterwards.

being good looking wont be the end all for getting dates, but ask wolfheart if it sure as hell doesnt get women interested. Like a personality, good looks are a tool. And tools are only as good as the person using them

:lmao:

I think this explains perfectly why I don't find male actors attractive.

They all conform to this set "type", and I don't consider that particular type atractive. (the type that is currently in style)
