Yes, my grandfather was a POW for nearly five years. All my other grandparents where in occupied territory but they survived (nearly 3% of the civilian population died, caused by the war and occupation). There was a starvation and very little food left, the Allies even dropped food during the last part of the war. The Nazis also executed a lot of random civilians as reprisals for the resistance, they even destroyed an entire village and killed nearly all of the men, only a few escaped. My POW grandfather also nearly starved to death in the POW camp, it was always pretty bad but at the end of the war infrastructure failed and they didn't get enough food.

I had some other family members that were prisoners of the Japanese in Indonesia (Dutch colony), that is supposed to be even worse than the Nazis.

You have an interesting family history. It is strange when you think about the reality that our grandparents lived through compared to ours. I think it's strange when people just assume that the peace that we have now is a natural state, it is taken for granted often.
My Swedish grandparents were safe from the war, but on my mothers side (Polish) less so. They lived in the city where the first bomb fell. But they were never prisoners or anything like that. My grandparents did not talk much about the war. Strange thing is that I remember was that my grandmother was so angry when they talked on the news (long time ago) about Russian families moving to Poland. Then I saw how she hated the Russians, I never heard her saying anything like that about the Germans. My grandfather told me that he had seen Jewish people shoot down on the street next to him, and hanged. Terrible, hard to imagine such an reality.

It was all pretty awful, I remember watching a WW2 documentary during the day and they showed a whole bunch of executions, it was pretty awful. They often do that with WW2 stuff, but when it is modern day horrors such as ISIS executing people they always stop right before the awful bits.

Maybe the old Polish people dislike the Russians more because the Communist rule was longer than the German occupation? And far more recent. My grandparents also always made the distinction between Germans and Nazis, and they used far less friendly words for the Nazis. My grandparents also didn't hate Germans at all. Many people here have of course been to Germany and speak a little German so they know people across the border are basically decent people.

Even the Asians can tell that Israelis are oddly white in the region.

We all know Jesus was white and he was from the region.

But it's pretty obvious there are people in Israel with different backgrounds, there are very white people and also very black people, African Jews. Pretty likely that both had ancestors from another place.

Yes, the people of Poland were betrayed twice by the West. Same for Czecoslovakia. I saw an older Polish dude on tv once, and he not just resented the Germans back then, but also the young Germans.

I think the length of the occupation mattered but I also have a feeling that the people were treated worse by the Russians. But off course also massacres like in Katyn were horrible. They really tried to annihilate the intelligentsia and officials in Poland. They wanted to bring down the society. And then they lied about it for years and years and tried to blame it on the Germans. I know my mother hated history in school, because it was all lies that they learned...

Must be annoying when history teaching is so skewed. I think it happens everywhere to some degree, I was never taught any of the history with Indonesia and the other colonies.

Yup, weather warning. Probably a very big thunderstorm coming in a few hours. It is super sunny, but also high humidity and it feels sort of tropical outside.

I hope they named that cat Gandalf.
