My boyfriend and I just started dating. We both have autism. We're going to our city's light up night on the 20th, and we're both super excited. Except for I'm terrified of fireworks. They induce melt downs because of the noise. They're just too loud. I've tried earplugs, and they help, but not enough.

So my boyfriend got me an early birthday gift- "extreme isolation" headphones, which while not bank breaking, weren't exactly cheap either. Not cheap enough that I haven't been able to buy them for myself.

I told him that I could just go into a store where the door shuts and hold my ears and wait. He says he could never do that to me.

Now we can go to light up night and watch the fireworks together!! !

He sounds like a great boyfriend, how considerate. To do something like this to spend time with you so you can enjoy the illumination effect of fireworks is very thoughtful. I'm happy for the pair of you.

From what you've provided, he definitely sounds like a keeper. Even if the headphones don't work entirely, the thought he put into such a gift shows that he wants you to be happy.

That said, fireworks are loud enough that they can still be uncomfortable even with ear protection. Be sure that he understands that you still may have to leave, and that if you do, it's nothing personal towards him... It's obvious that he wants to spend his time with you, so even if you can't watch fireworks together, try to find some activity that both of you can enjoy.

Since the earplugs almost worked, I think earplugs PLUS headphones will mean I'm good to go!

He sounds like a great guy. I definitely hope things work out between you two. (Just try to keep on top of things. Don't let it fizzle.)

That's a sweet story.
I like hearing stories like this. They stay in my mind like counters to cynical thoughts.
