When I was a little girl it was German bride mills, then it was Phillipines bride mills and when I was older, it was Russian bride mills. now it is some other bride mill.

The problem with foreign born brides from these mills is they are so docile(heck, they are slaves and chattel, face it) at first, then they get a load of being an American and woah, nellie. . .can you say 'community property?' Good for them.

Virginia Senator Jim Webb's wife is Vietnamese.

I don't see anything wrong with it--whom you are going to marry is a very personal decision.

Some of the marriages seem a bit rushed.

As far as I can tell, it is primarily Singaporean and Taiwanese men who are marrying Vietnamese women.

My brother's wife is Filipino, he met her ages ago (1992) on the Internet ( she was working for Intel at a chip making plant). They have been married for years and have seemed to be very happy the one time I have seen them together.

One of the videos mentioned something about a shortage of women in Singapore and Taiwan. I wonder if it is something like China, where female fetuses are more likely to be aborted than male fetuses?

I remember hearing about United Arab Emirates, where a man can have up to four wives at a time. A lot of the extra wives were being imported from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and other countries, which turned UAE into quite a melting pot.

My wife is from Philippines, I have spend some time there and met a number of women who were seeking contacts with Western men. They have more traditional values and want to appear feminine and attractive to a man. That is also what you see in the advertisments. But they are not docile or chattel, and this is not some sort of new slave trade.

A large proportion have a college degree or are college students. They have grown up in a society where life is more difficult than in a Western country, they are independent, and have a will of their own. They may chat a little in a cyber-cafe after having used the computer for finishing an assignment, just to see what might happen. For some of them it might turn into romance and then serious when they make contact, other are focused on finding a good spouse.

The terms "bride mills" and "mail order brides" are degoratory and created by Western woman who welcome Asian women as much as American carmakers welcome japanese cars, that are smaller, smarter and more reliable. In Philippines it is called "pen pal" to write with a potential spouse at a distance, and it is an accepted part of the culture among Philippine youth. This also means that girls talk freely about their pen pals. Some of them have told me about their experiences and even asked my opinion about their Western pen pal.

Their wishes are very similar to those of the men they seek contact with. They want a good family life, a spouse who will be nice to them, and who they find physically attractive. I cannot see this is any worse, than when two young people in a Western country get together based on their apperances when they meet in a disco in a more or less intoxicated condition.

Okay, maybe "bride mill" isn't politically correct, but my original intention was to discuss specifically brides from Vietnam. Then, my topic got edited.

Here is an article from the NY Times:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/29/world ... &th&emc=th

concerning non-Korean Asian wives in Korea. Apparently some concerns about their children being accepted into Korean society.
