See, that's WAY oversimplifying it. Touch and intellectual bonding AREN'T mutually exclusive, and this is where a lot of guys fall down.
Touch is an important part of showing interest in someone. Acts like putting your arm around a girl or touching her shoulder are what show you're interested in being more than friends, Girls, same thing for guys.
It doesn't always mean if they touch you they're interested in you, but that's how you get involved with people.
