I hear it's about 4 to 1...I believe it's more like 9 to 1. So chances are a man with AS will end up with a woman who not only is non-AS but has no idea what Asperger's Syndrome IS.

Most women in the US (and I am sure men too) are completely ignorant about Asperger's Syndrome.
How do you deal with it?

I think it's pretty well established that rate of AS diagnosis is higher in men than women but there's a lot of controversy about the "real" number. Personally, I don't think it's demographically realistic for me to expect to be able to date an Aspie girl, although I still like to hope...

How do I deal with it? That's what the WP forums are for, for one thing.

Obviously most people don't knowe much about AS. That's true of loads of disorders etc though. You can't blame people really - I mean people can't be expected to have much knowledge of EVERYTHING.

How you deal with it is you help them understand it yourself. Tell them

I think the best way for us Aspies to deal with it when it comes to relationships is to turn gay & date other Aspie guys or give up on the idea of a relationship. it'll be more logical than trying for a relationship with an NT

NTs are all different, just like aspies are. Someone else just being another aspie doesn't mean they'd make a better partner, and someone not being autistic doesn't mean they'd be s**t - being NT doesn't mean being incapable of learning/understanding

Personally I wouldn't want an aspie gf (I'm open to it, but doubt it would happen). I'd prefer an NT gf

The ratio is widely disputed, because not everyone is diagnosed. The 4:1 ratio is only for those with a formal diagnosis.

Some researchers believe that Asperger syndrome is grossly underdiagnosed in women and girls.

BBC News: Autism 'may be missed in girls' - September 2008
The Guardian: Doctors are 'failing to spot Asperger's in girls' - April 2009
The Times: Autism and Asperger syndrome underdiagnosed in women, researchers say - February 2010

So if you are interested in partnering with a woman who has AS, don't give up hope: she may be out there, but not yet realize she has AS.

If you're concerned about finding a partner who will be able to accept and understand you, I think the best thing to do is to become your own advocate. Read as much as you can about Asperger syndrome and get comfortable talking about it. A woman you meet might not know about AS, but if she is the type of person to be open-minded, understanding, flexible, with a positive attitude, you could be the first person to educate her.

People don't come into the world magically knowing about AS; they learn about it. I think the likelihood of an NT person understanding a person with AS has more to do with the NT person's personality, their attributes, the way that they tend to react to new ideas than it does with having prior knowledge.

I don't know if this is a reliable way to measure this or not, but Comscore shows this site having a slightly higher amount of women than men, a little bit higher of a skew than the normal asymmetry of more men than women in the general public, and more women than men online (mirroring the general population again).

So in other words, wrongplanet.net has a slightly more female audience than normal. Whether this in turn can be applied to the general autistic population is another question, since I seem to have read in various places that more males than females fall on the spectrum, one theory being that autism/aspergers might be a case of having a brain that is "too male."

The ratio is 4 to 1 with autism in general and around 9 to 1 for people with an Asperger diagnosis. If we accept that AS is a mild form of autism, then the true figure must be 4 to 1, just like it is for classic autism. Women with AS are under-diagnosed.

We dont actually know the precise numbers for ratio for aspie male to aspie female but in terms of dating: does that really matter since people with aspergers is like one in several hundred, so many aspie females dont have much shot at finding an aspie male either unless we look into autism/aspergers online communities or support groups. How do you even know that an aspie female would be best for you? Just cause their aspie doesnt mean they would make a better partner then an NT female would. For me: Ive dated a couple aspie males: from my limited experience I'm finding an NT would probably be better suited for me.

I think more women are here to learn about it because they have a family member, or close friend with autism/AS. Women are generally more maternal than guys
