Five Languages of Love and Black Box Republic?
I had to read one a couple years ago for a class and was just thinking about it tonight for some reason. I remember it seemed to have a heavy religious undertone, but other than that the concepts seemed solid.
I think I kind of lean towards the Acts of Service (or however he worded it) category. I think the same concept on more of a sliding scale would be really helpful because all five seemed like stuff everyone fits in, it was just more you need to know what degree you and others around you are in each to make use of it. Like I also felt really strongly about the Physical Touch language but I HATE touch being forced in any way (or maybe I'm more towards that and that's why I hate that so much) and I usually get an all or nothing kind of answer when I ask someone to back off.
Speaking of sliding scales anyone tried out Black Box Republic? I've heard good things about their set up using sliding scales instead of just generalized questionnaires to describe yourself. I kind of wanted to try it out, but I'm not looking for anyone to date so I just haven't bothered. Is it ones of those just all about dating or can you really go there to find people just to hang out with and talk to like they advertise.
Yeah kind of a random combo of topics but that's tangents for you.

I can't understand the things described.
I assume 5 languages of love is either an obscure series of self-help books
or something similar used by a "new religion". It makes me wonder if they
teach astrology and palm reading in schools these days.
Does the class teach touching?
In the USA that is considered unusual and inappropriate for schools,
so it may be a cultural difference.
Sliding scale usually means something similar to flat tax but as a fee for
services. Alternatively I vaguely guess that some kind of thermometer-like
figure is used in place of multiple choices on the questionnaire.
Black Box Republic means nothing to me but if I let synaesthetic associations
apply, I would imagine the concept of a mysterious bureaucratic regime.
I'm not complaining or being critical of you.
I really don't understand the question,
just thinking with my typing fingers (like "thinking out loud")
trying to understand the topic.

I've heard of five categories before. They are verbal, haptic, service-based and two categories I don't remember. I suppose anything can be glued to nonsense, but to begin with these are simply different categories of actions that are used to express affection.
They come with the implication that people have individual aversions and predilections for various of these categories, which seems reasonable enough, considering how many on this very site have stated that they do not enjoy touch.

"Everyone loves the dolphin. A bitter shark - emerging from it's cold depths - doesn't stand a chance." This is hyperbol.
"Run, Jump, Fall, Limp off, Try Harder."
The Five Love Languages is a series of self help books. Black Box Republic is a dating/social networking sort of site. I think the other two are material gifts and time but I can't remember for sure.
I actually didn't read the book in public school, it was on a reading list for a psychology class where part of the project was reading something out of our comfort zone and I HATE self help books, so I figured that was about as far from comfort as I could get on the list. Funnily enough though I did learn astrology and palmistry in a mythology class in high school
From what I understand is the sliding scale (literally a set of numbers with a slider on the screen to select from one end to the other) on the Black Box Republic sight are set up in a similar fashion to the Kinsey Scale for sexuality (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinsey_scale for explanation because I really suck at that sort of thing usually). I'm not sure what numbers they have set up but an example would be on a scale of 1 to 10 how much do you want to be around people today and what not. However from what I've seen on the site (finally got around to looking it up out of curiosity's sake) everything seems to be on a 1 to 5 scale, which seems a little limiting to me, but much less so than just pick from a multiple choice static catagory.
