on love and relationships? I ask because I never had a clue and I wonder if some people just naturally understand the hidden rules or if some parents specifically instruct their teens on these matters. My son is a fluke, I have never had a successful long term relationship and probably never will. It's OK, I am just musing on what might have been.

No. My parents told me about as little as possible.

The best they did was try and set me up on dates with dumb blonde types.

Once I asked my father what he thought was the secret to a successful marriage. He thought for a long moment, then said "pre-nup." :?

My mother tried very hard to keep me from getting into any relationships.

It didn't work. Of course.

Did you find you had an instinct about how to negotiate a relationship?
I'm trying to figure out if my problem was lack of knowledge or instinct.

Shortly before I started college, both of my parents tried to tell me to keep my virginity; since they never explained either the mechanics or emotions involved with sexual interactions, I had no stinking idea of what they were talking about!

I do my best to learn from my mistakes made in past relationships, but since it is infrequently that I am in a relationship, it's kind of a moot point right now if my parents did teach me anything useful that I can remember.

Absolutely not. I've been in many relationships (I'm 53) married twice, three kids w/three different dads (one of whom I was married to at the age of 43, second marriage - first time I got married, I was eighteen).

Still have no clue. You wouldn't believe how oblivious I have been - to the point where I have to say, there won't be another relationship for me because I can not afford it. Emotionally, physically, financially, or any other way. All my relationships have ended badly, and usually only after years of dysfunction and/or abuse.

Sorry.....

I haven't been in any relationships. I was never approached for one. So I guess they figured they didn't need to tell me anything.

They never gave advice, but I never asked. I think they figured since I was a girl (and people say I'm pretty) that boys would just approach. (Older) adults would say stuff like 'oh, I bet the boys are knockin down your door' Lol. I've had relationships and I'm not complaining, but I don't think I had the kind of 'success' they expected. (Dated as many or the kind of boys my peers dated.)

No. They have two failed marriages each and their personality disorders make it almost impossible for them to have succesful, long-term relationships.

Is it normal for parents to give sound relationship advice? Maybe it only happens on the Cosby Show.

I never had a close relationship with my parents. We had lots of problems getting along when I was younger due to my AS & other issues. I never go to my parents for advice & I do not keep em informed about my personal life either. I'm afraid of starting a major argument by talking to em about anything. when I want advice; I go online
