Let's take it back to the basics.

If you are a woman you want a man who is good natured, kind and loyal.
He must be brave enough to face the world, get a job and protect you and your children.
He must be willing to stand by his family through thick and thin.

If you are a man you want a woman who will stand by you and help you through thick and thin.

For richer or for poorer. For better or for worse. In sickness and in health.

That's it.

Before dating is even considered, the woman must have eyes, teeth, lips and hair. Her skin must be on her body and she must be maggot-less or parasite-free. Being alive would also be preferred, or at least some form of a self-aware zombie.

Trying to get back on topic (not that I can truly speak; I'm one of the 18 year old guys who've never had a gf but would rather not get all depressed about it), I think it boils down to mutual respect and understanding: knowing (and caring about) each other's limits, and accepting both the good and bad. Just my $0.02
