I'll go first.

Their pets.

If you meet someone with a pet, get interested in the animal. Find out its name. Comment on its colours, general health and appearance. If it's exotic, talk about its provenance. If it does something cute, mention it. Pet it, if it's friendly. If you both love animals, great. If you don't, be tolerant and interested to the extent that you can.

Maple sugar candy.

Ask them if they like it. If yes, comment on the color, texture, flavor, provenance, etc of various brands. If they say they do not like it, then tell them that they have just created a new arch-nemesis and that you will dedicate the rest of your life to seeking their destruction via extremely embarrassing methods.

I saw a tv show of a small maple syrup factory I think in Vermont. They boiled
the syrup down (I guess to a hard candy temperture) then they dump it into
the snow. Kids then grab bits of it. Got me thinking maple toffee would be nice.
(maple syrup + butter).

Oh, it is! And...

... ahem.

Clearly your conversation starter works better than mine, emp.

Not quite what I was going for, though. Guess I should have called the thread "Conversation Starters with NTs" to be precise.

I once asked a guy where he got his pants and he told me hot topic.I said that was cool and then he asked me what I was doing that night.

My dog is very old. If a lady commented on his health . I would have to say
he is blind, deaf, likes to sleep alot. His name is Beau but he is totalily deaf.
He is older than the average user of this site but in his younger days just as mean
as the people on WP he is a toy poodle:)

Ah. NT's. OK, how about observing what they are doing for a moment, and then saying: "You're doing it all wrong, fool."

That always starts a conversation for me.

I think that the original poster wasn't trying to drive them away, or antagonize them.

Mind you I would probably start things off by asking something strange like "What is your position on Street Lamps?" to gauge the other persons capacity for oddness. (Fact: If someone has difficulty with oddity, you probably don't want to spend much time with them)

ALOHA, Ore. - An Oregon woman was looking for love in all the wrong places when she called 9-1-1 wanting a "cute" sheriff's deputy to return to her house.

I think talking about Mr Mark will be a healthy yet interesting conversation starter.
