Some thoughts to ponder in relation to this.
Would you consider prostitution as a viable career choice for yourself, any children you have, or anyone else you care about?
In addition to those who work as prostitutes to fund a drug habit, there are also men, women and children who are trafficked into the sex industry and are effectively slaves.
Legislation or decriminalisation may make sex work safer for some, but the nature of "the game" is essentially oppression, of one form or another.
yes, i agree with all of your points.
not many people decide to stay in the trade once they have the option to leave (something like 90% of sex trade workers desire to leave, but many do not have the option).
legalization creates a 2-tiered system where the undiseased, non-drug-using, adult, legal immigrants (or natural citizens) have a better, safer, job environment. but the illegal prostitution continues in the legalized environment, so women who may be drug-addicted, underage, diseased, or illegal immigrants have to work underground. i have no idea why some men continue to solicit the illegal prostitutes when given the choice to access the legal ones, but it says a lot about our society that the illegal trade continues virtually unchecked.
so really, legalization improves the situation for certain women only (and their users). there will continue to be horrible conditions for a subset of sex workers.
i believe a better solution is sweden's approach, which ackowledges that desperate women will choose the sex trade as a last option, but that it is not an okay solution. therefore, it is illegal for the "johns" to access prostitutes in sweden.
