Should I try to talk to him?

So uhh I saw an ex at the local convinced store near my friends house. I wanted to buy cigs and so I got out my ID and he was like 'uhh I know you don't need your id." but yeah I think it was a guy I broke up with in HS. I still care about how he is doing but I felt it would have been bad to say so in the store while he was at work. But I don't know I just feel like I should talk to him though I don't know what to say.

So yeah don't know if anyone has advice I appreciate it.

Is this someone with whom you are interested in rekindling a relationship or friendship? Nothing wrong with small talk either way, how are you, how have been, insert one more generic question...
