A Neurotypical friend of mine said to me in the bar last night "If we did not need women to have children then the male race would be better off without them"

Do you think this was an unfair thing to say?

No, just incredibly ignorant.

Why is it ignorant?

Maleness is not a "Race" according to Linaean Taxonomy. It also ignores the non-reproductive contributions that women have made and continue to make to society.

I would have left him with the tab.

Yeah, it was an unfair and mean-spirited statement to make! However, a little context might be helpful too; did your friend just go through a break-up with a long-time girlfriend? Was it a bad breakup? Is he always so critical of women in general? Had he gotten into a fight with a woman with whom he is particularly close (wife, girlfriend, sister, mother, cousin?). Perhaps he was just letting off a little steam...

... and perhaps he was just a no-account, good-for-nothing, woman-hating neanderthal lacking two brain cells to rub together!

But I digress...

To be fair to the bloke, I've heard the same things from women. Probably more often.

People who want to segregate themselves should just go away.

So.. he's gay?

Sounds to me he sees women as baby makers and prefers the company of guys.

Well the Greeks seemed to be of the same opinion but then Greek men didn't mind having sex with their male buddies.

Your friend was probably expressing some frustration over dealing with women. For every reason a man may be frustrated for a woman there is at least one reason that a woman might be frustrated with a man.

You should've told him that men were the first draft, and women the perfected design! :P

Well if the creator was an engineer then the 2.0 version would've likely be more expensive, had add-on gadgets to make it more complicated, make it require constant upgrades to keep it competitive in the market and have an even more confusing user manual.

...which sounds about right.

You're asking for opinions on a man so sexist he declares women's only worth as far as he's concerned is to serve as baby incubators.

His character can be guessed-at.

It is an unfair statement but I can understand it as well, as well as the need of members from both genders to voice such complaints. Individual humans are confusing enough, to both ads and nt people, add in the necessary complications that are relationships and well you get kind of a Molotov cocktail of emotions. There have been plenty of men who made me wish I'd been born a lesbian and many men I've driven insane, without meaning to.

If he meant it the same way racists say we could do without people of "bla-bla" race/color, then your friend needs help but if he was just venting let him. I'm sure the next new girl will change his mind.

Of course that was an unfair statement. So unappreciative of the contributions of women. No mention of men also needing women for cooking and cleaning. Yes, I'm just kidding so don't give me a feminist rant :P

Joking aside, I wouldn't take that statement too seriously. It's not like men are just going to collectively decide to vaporize all women to see if it is really the case.

Philosophically, it is an interesting question to ask what an all male world would be like. Or all female. Implications abound. Would clothing still be necessary? Would what constitutes status change? Would there even be gender roles with only one gender? Would the world be more or less violent?

Or an even better twist would be what if there were more than two sexes necessary for reproduction?

Ridiculous questions, but fun to think about. Men and women are stuck with each other, though. Whether they would be better off without each other is completely irrelevant. Therefore, it is a statement not even worth taking seriously.
