Getting to know someone doesn't require masses of money.

This is a thread to give each other ideas for dates that don't cost oodles of cash, but are still potentially enjoyable by both people.

Fish and Chips by the seaside.

Go for a hike up a hillside (bring sandwiches!).

Visit a nature reserve.

Your turn.... :P

You might well want to be careful with this one if it's too isolated. Would set off alarm bells in many women!

Museum tour. Depending on the museum, of course, some are expensive!

Also, I tend to pay my own way on dates, so it doesn't much matter how "expensive" the date is.

Oh, and I agree with Tequila. I love to hike, but I'd save that for something other than the first few dates.

Going swimming if it is warm enough
Dinner and a movie (at home)
Going downtown and window-shopping (really neat in the winter, when the Christmas decorations are up)
The zoo :D (This won't work for everyone)
Going to a local or state fair

I'd only recommend this one if the people know each other fairly well already, and trust each other. Also, if they weren't as unfit as me and likely to have a heart attack half way up.

Come on Lancastrian, give us some suggestions.

Let me think. Can you cook? Make the person a meal. Do check though that they're not all halal/kosher/vegetarian/vegan/some other allergy first, mind.
Pub? A cheap few beers doesn't have to cost much.
Graveyard? This might actually work, depending on the nature of both parties.
Meeting in the town square? Free to do.
Café? Cheap also.

Hmmm...

-Birdwatching at the local landfill (Without sandwiches)
-Share a bottle of cough syrup and talk about the old times that never happened
-Lunch in the yard of a beautiful, foreclose home. Pretend you live there.
-Go fishing, bait optional
-Watch planes take off/land at local airport
-Go watch submarine races

A nice walk through anyplace with tolerable weather (or indoors) can be enjoyable in the right company. Museum, public garden or park, along a river.

I've always enjoyed playing games to get to know someone. Yes, I got my bum kicked in everything from Trivial Pursuit to Risk to Chess over the years, but, it gives you something to keep occupied during any pauses that crop up, and provides insight into someone's temperament (no one likes a sore loser... or a sore winner).

To a lecture (just so long as it's not too crowded... I went to a Network Security lecture that wasn't too bad because it was in a large space, but, I've also been drug to a gardening lecture that was packed with people and I was very uncomfortable in the setting).

Cheap Dates

why yes, i AM a che... oh. never mind.

some ideas:

...go for a drive to look at the skyline, or interesting buildings or subdivisions*
...have an ice cream and walk around historic parts of town
...board games or cards (especially good for a double date too)
...urban exploring, i.e. underground places, abandoned buildings*
...birdwatching/berry picking/nature walk*
...community league dances (free or cheap)
...free trials of dance/yoga/art lessons/pottery making/cooking workshop
...author readings at the library or bookstore
...amateur plays or concerts (watch for college grad shows)
...CD launch parties (they like to pad the audience and make money from the merch)
...museum or science centres often have free or reduced price days (i.e. tuesdays)
...gallery walk around closely located art galleries with free admission
...video game arcade (make the games last)
...wild and crazy bedroom gymnasti... errr... well, not for a first date, maybe.

*not good for first dates unless you are well-acquainted, for safety reasons

Some of these ideas won't work because a) not many people are into them and those that are would be far more likely to hang around on specialist boards - I'm thinking of the UE idea and b) because of potential trouble with the law.

it depends on the people, obviously.... they are a variety of ideas that cover many, many interests. i don't think there is a person is existence who would be into all of these things! the point is to give multiple ideas for multiple people.

trespassing for urban exploration can be fun. lots of people do it, so why not on a date? (been there done that )
