Many of you had mentioned being too anxious to send messages on dating sites, or not knowing what to write. So, I'd like to try a practice game...

Two parts:

a) Respond to the previous person's message. (It doesn't matter what gender they are or if you'd date them. This is just practice.)

b) Imagine the person below you has a profile you found interesting. Write them a message! Make sure you include some details from their profile.

--------

I'll start:

Hi! So your profile says you're a spaceship captain :) Very cool. I've always been interested in space travel. What's the coolest planet you've visited? Meet any aliens there?

(i don't have a dating profile or anything. i am just playing along because i like this idea. it's hard to imagine a profile tho)

response: i'd say the coolest planet was probably earth, because the aliens (aka "humans") are so interesting to observe. but seriously... well.... even speaking seriously my answer doesn't change. :P

new message: i thought about sending a message and decided against it. i suspect your music taste trumps mine as i had to google 73.9% of the bands you listed on your profile. so ultimately i decided not to send a message to you.

oops.

*hurriedly fluffs profile with random and obscure bands*

A) *faints from awesomeness of their profile*
You have an awesome taste in music. Fancy going to a gig?
B) I like being at home but I do go out occasionally. Not an alcoholic, don't smoke and generally healthy.
Not really able to do a lot of things and need looking after like a pet.

Response:

Well I already have a pet :P But it's cool that you don't drink or smoke. So what did you like about my profile?

(I'd suggest not using that last sentence when you're sending messages for real. Try to stick to the positives.)

Message:

 Your profile is hilarious. My family is the same way...

Anyway, you mentioned that you just moved here a few months ago. Do you like it here so far? Where are you from originally?

-Yes i moved a couple of months ago from the americas. I like it here so far, its different enough to feel a special type of foreign yet still retains a homely vibe.

-You have quite the varied taste in music, do you pick what to listen to by your mood or just leave it in shuffle?

A) You read about my guilty pleasure for Disney songs, didn't you?
But since I don't have any kind of Ipod, I just pick what I listen to by my mood. What about you--mood or shuffle?

B) Hey, there! I'm so glad I found your profile! You write fiction? So do I! What kind of writing do you like to do? What genre, themes, character types, etc.?
I also noticed that you're into your marching band. I was in my high school marching band as a trombone player, and I'd like to continue into college, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to do that with the workload. What instrument do you play?
I am fascinated and excited about many other things in your profile, but one thing stood out to me. You're a fan of Futurama, Red Dwarf, Avatar: The Last Airbender, AND Fairly Oddparents? Those are four of my favorite TV shows! Have you ever seen My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic or Transformers: Prime? They're both on Youtube if you want to check them out.
I hope to hear from you soon. Good luck on your search, whether or not it ends with me! :)

Oh wow, you do ask a lot of questions :D
Well, I like writing horror, flesh eating zombies type stuff, let me know if you would like to read some.
Yes, my life revolves around the marching band, college comes second - I understand your comment about time pressures, practicing nine times a week is hard to fit in. Do you think you'd like to take it up again?
Hmmm, about the movies, I think you may be mistaking me with someone else...I tend to enjoy horror, its a good thing similar movie tastes are not essential for anything!

I found your comments about Bank of Cogs liquidity ratios fascinating, and am interested to know how you got involved in the industry?

Wow. This is hard. I've never been on a dating site and I don't know anything about economics.

A) Ahem. Thank you, it's refreshing to hear from someone else who finds pleasure in liquidity ratios. I'll tell you all about the industry when you have the time, but it's a long story so maybe we could talk about it over coffee?

B) Hey, your profile says you studied botany. I studied English, but I've always found botany fascinating. What's your favorite plant? Personally, I love lichen because it is so beautiful and the symbiosis between the fungi and the algae is inspiring. What did you write you dissertation on?

Oh wow, I minored in english. I like all plants that have no pollen, no particular favourites - though I fully agree with your comments about lichen - they were the topic of my dissertation. I have some rare variations growing in the lab, you are welcome to come see them sometime, and maybe we could follow that with coffee?

I enjoyed looking at the hiking photos in your profile, the first set look like they are from the himilaya's though I cant quite place where the second set are from?
