I'm meant to be getting married at some point. Not only are weddings a minefield of social conventions that I either can't understand or make me angry, but if I go on wedding forums to try to understand them I feel completely left out because of all the lead-up events like showers and parties because I have a grand total of two friends and can't have any of that.

I'm also feeling discouraged because we want to have the wedding we want, but since only two people there aren't going to be family and we both have ridiculously conservative families, we pretty much are expected to fork out $30,000 for a day we won't particularly enjoy.

Has anyone else been through similar things leading up to their wedding? Any advice would be appreciated.

I planned my wedding myself and it turned out great. I can help you if you want, or explain things to you that you don't understand.

That would be helpful!

When it comes to the conventions, I think there's no winning that one because the reasons are never very good and usually involve some level of sexism.

Well, if you want a traditional wedding there will be a certain level of that. If you don't want a traditional wedding, then you certainly don't have to have one. It's your day after all and you should have whatever you want! Don't let anybody pressure you into anything, because people will try to. I can help you with either type. Do you know yet what you are wanting?

I am getting married in March. We live in San Antonio and they have a small island on the Riverwalk called Marriage Island that can be rented from the city in half hour increments for $120. We are having a family friend who is ordained marry us. The most expensive part so far is the reception at a downtown restaurant which is running us about $1000. We are renting a riverwalk boat for cocktails and appetizers for a half hour at $150. My suit and her dress will probably cost another $2000 together, and then the honeymoon will cost us about $4000 (hopefully!!) So yes, expensive, but for us well worth it. Good luck

I know two people who are getting married at the age of 18. Whatever you do don't get married at 18.

This advice probably isn't worth much at all but if you really think you won't be able to have the wedding you want or enjoy that day; tell your family that you want to elope instead of dealing with the wedding; & when they object you tell them fine but the have to handle all the planning & arrangements including financial because you are only having the wedding for them & not for yourselves. I think there's an old tradition about the bride's family paying for the wedding. Congratulations btw :D
