Hardest Break-Up... Please help.
I had been in a serious relationship (or at least deeply emotionally invested) for the past 4 months now. And this past week I broke it off. I just couldn't take it anymore. I felt so much negativity from him.
It started with little things here and there. Comments. Sarcasm. Excuses. I just figured 'He's a little cynical'. Then there came punishments, withholding information, insults... and it only escalated. It got worse when I went back to school this Fall. Everything was a head game. Everything was a 'serious talk'. Everything would leave me broken, in tears, and I couldn't figure out why.
I started to go to counseling for it, which luckily is offered as a free service by my university, and after only sharing a few instances with my counselor, he said to me "He's showing signs of an abuser." He told me that not all abuse is physical or sexual. I told him that he's never once hit me or shoved me or anything! But he had asked me if he's ever done any physical contact that I was uncomfortable with... and I said yes. I explained that he would grab my hands (whenever I said something disagreeable) and would pop all the knuckles, even though I was begging him to stop, that it hurts. He would also tickle me incessantly, until the final time when I not only began to involuntarily cry, but I suddenly went into convulsions, which truly scared me. But now that I type this, I think the parts that scared me the most were perhaps not the pain, but what he would tell me as he did them... "You can't escape" "Stop being such a p!#@$ about it" among other things. Luckily, I firmly told him that he needs to stop doing that. So he never tickled me since or popped my hands. But... that was the easy part. The physical aspects were something I could explain to him, because it was something he could readily see and control.
The mental/psychological and emotional aspects, however, had been a completely different experience. A nightmare. My counselor tells me now, in retrospect, that what he was doing was called Projection. And it's a self-defense mechanism. All of the insults, the impatience, the caustic remarks. One of the absolute biggest issues between us was honesty/trust. It became near daily where I would be constantly accused of lying. This ranged from going home to have dinner with my family (per my family's request) and letting him know, to which he was convinced that I was lying about the dinner and just wanted to get away from him, to much bigger issues like when I let myself open to him and said that I loved him, only for him to interrogate me so much that I took it back, because it didn't fit his definition of love. That took a month or so to get through alone, and when I finally started saying that I loved him again, he downright told me to my face that I didn't. I didn't love him or care about him. That I'm lying.
The last fight we had was a week ago, over the phone, where he was so angry with me for disagreeing with him, he asked me "Do you like being a dramatic whore?" to which... I couldn't answer. Logically, that question is a loaded gun, for whichever way I answer, I am wrong. His questions were peppered with tactics like that. That was not the worst thing he has said to me, just the most recent. I was cut to the bone. I tried reconciling but ended up having a break down. He came to my house and I was hysterical. After talking, I went with him to stay the night at a friend's house, hoping that things would be fixed. But it was the last straw. I woke up the next morning to go to work, hugged him goodbye... and that's when I began to feel nothing. I've never had the sensation of literally being empty, as if my organs and bones and all my innards were vacuumed out of me. I wrote him a 6-page letter of my feelings and thoughts of everything. His response was "I don't know what to say to that." He didn't have any words, whether of anger, or of remorse. So I broke up with him the next morning.
He's trying to get back with me... and the tug he has on my heart is still there. As of right now, since I'm away, it's not as strong. I haven't seen him in person for a week now. I think if I did, I would give in. He's now feeling helpless, crying out to me... pleading and begging me. It's just as I did all those times with him, as if we've switched roles. He's finally feeling the pain of rejection, and knowing that, I'm aware that he needs to feel that. He has to be hit hard with those feelings, to know that he can't mess around with deep feelings like love, trust, guilt and anger.
I wrote all this to say... that I don't know what to do. His first reaction to me breaking up was to go and suddenly be interested in Asperger's Syndrome, which I have, and say that he was doing all the wrong things because of my diagnosis. He was saying that his actions were normal, but because I'm wired different, his normal actions were clashing with mine. Ultimately, I was the problem because of my AS. Of course, when I told him straight out that he was manipulating and abusing me, there was an audible change in his voice. And I don't know if it's real or not. Suddenly... dozens of 'I'm so sorry's came from him, along with "I had no idea it was this bad." "What can I do to fix it?"
So now I'm in this situation, where he is claiming to know what he's done, how much he's hurt me, and now he wants to fix things. And I don't know if I should give him one last chance... or not. He's saying that he wants to formulate a plan to fix things, like writing it down. He says we can go to counseling together to get help (I think he ultimately would have to go alone, but he wants me there), and to even write a letter of apology to my parents (because they absolutely don't want him around me now). Are his projected efforts genuine? How will I be able to tell? His behavior seems sincere, but... I doubt him because of such a lack of it before hand. He hardly felt that he had to apologize for anything, and that forgiveness was just giving permission to hurt someone again. And now that he's sorry for so many things, and begging for my forgiveness... I just don't know. What do I do?

Absolutely, completely 100% do not go back to him. Do not accept his calls, delete his e-mails, texts and messages without reading them. This will feel painful for about 1-3 weeks, and then it'll be out of your system. Six months down the road you'll look back with a sigh of relief at the bullet you've dodged. I congratulate you for getting out of it.
I'm so serious. This man sounds like a classic, textbook abuser.
Abuse comes in many forms. He doesn't have to hit you or rape you to be an abuser.
If you go back with him chances are that he'll repeat this sort of behavior. Maybe not now, but in 3 months, a year... And by that time, you'd be so connected to him it would be even harder to break up with him.
Listen to your councilor: this guy is trouble in the making. Things will only escalate. I agree with mv, "Do not accept his calls, delete his e-mails, texts and messages without reading them." It's hurts now, but it will hurt worse if you stay with him.

I have to go along with mv, deconstruction, and ictus75 here. You gain nothing by putting yourself back into that situation. I studied psychology for 7 years, and one thing that comes up over and over is that his kind of behavior does not change without a lot of professional help AND a sincere desire to MAKE the necessary changes. If you go back, it will get worse.
This is what I was afraid of... but thank you for telling me everyone.
@LexF You say you've studied Psychology... so should I not believe him if he says that he'll do all the things to get help? I think that he could be sincere, but once I'm back he won't follow through. Even after I told him that he would have to get help from someone, he only agreed if we would both go together, and that right after that, in the same day, he thought that we didn't need anyone to help us, that we can do it on our own. I suppose that's a sign that things won't ever get better...
So I know what I have to do now. I'll do my best to update what's going on by using this thread. It really does break my heart that he's being so saddened by this, saying he's never wanted to fight for anything like this in his life, that I'm worth it... but is it all just pretty words? He's never said them before. By his own logic, he's having to take his own medicine and to know what it's like. He's finally feeling remorse.
I hope things are okay after all this...

Bolded: yes, those are only pretty words, those are not his real feelings. He's just had to up his game because he's seeing you slip away. Your first paragraph (to LexF) is paramount. There's no way in hell this guy intends to get any help of any kind.
I've never formally studied psychology but I've been in an abusive relationship and one of my best friends works with victims of domestic abuse. I really can't stress this enough: your story sounds like something that would have been an after-school special on emotional abuse and trauma, that's how completely textbook everything you've said is.
good for you that you were able to leave! you should be seriously proud of your inner strength at being able to walk away. you can be certain that he cannot change for you. you two had a dysfunctional relationship and you would fall back into the familiar pattern eventually. it's just a matter of time. he would be a ticking time bomb.
someone close to me went back to her emotionally abusive husband as she could not escape the grip - she even took a several-month course to learn to be emotionally independent. he was physically abusive too, in an almost identical way to your boyfriend (i.e. tickling, "joking" physical intimidation, and once he cut a chunk of her hair. ). but now we worry even more about her as she has so much pride that she would never want to admit if/when her husband relapses into the abusive actions.
(((hugs)))
Generally speaking, an abuser will say anything to keep someone under his control. The problem is, it's hard to know whether he's following through or not unless you're there monitoring every step of the way, and that has some serious downside potential (for you) if he's not legitimately working on it. He may go through the motions until he feels he's regained control, but that isn't going to help you any.
It doesn't sound like he's really committed to getting the kind of help he needs...."we can do it on our own" usually means "I liked it the way it was before, let's go back to that."
Ultimately, you have to decide how much time and effort you want to put into this. Just be aware that words don't mean much in a case like this.
mooniestar, I'm with what everyone has said here. I was in a mentally abusive relationship too, I can see a lot of similarities to what I went through in what you wrote. The only difference with me was due to my being physically stronger than my awful ex, he didn't become physically abusive (the only reason I know this was because when he got angry at times he'd move as if to hit me).
I suggest to stay away from this guy, mv is correct it is textbook.
I found it difficult to stay away from my abusive ex too at the start (despite it getting so bad with him that I wouldn't have minded if he got run over by a bus). The familiarity of him made it difficult but after I got over that, I got really angry with him and me for so much wasted time. It lasted three years, please don't make my mistake.
Work on your confidence because you deserve much better than this guy. (((hugs))))

I'll add my 2pence in: With respect, if he was half a decent person he would be too ashamed of himself to even dare ask you back. Keep looking onwards and upwards I say :)

For late bloomers, the first relationship will feel the most serious. Breaking it off is really hard. It is the right choice, as everyone has said.
Look to the future. You're going to date around a little, watching and learning about normal social interaction. Eventually, maybe a serious relationship that has a healthy foundation.
I am not getting back with him. It's been 12 hours and I've heard nothing from him. I've kept my phone off, which has been hard for me, because I have such a knee-jerk reaction to "Oh, I had better check my phone, he may have called/texted." But I still have not spoken with him for over 30 hours now...
I only want this to be over. I just want my life back. But I can't bring myself to tell him penultimate things like "Just give up." "Never contact me again." My mother is very vehement on the matter, telling me "You don't owe him a single thing! Don't talk with him at all; don't answer his calls, block him in every way you can." It's... just hard. I absolutely hate that I'm treating someone like this, someone I would love and devote my time and energy to. It's heartless and it's not me. Is that how this works? That I have to be cold and unrelenting? I mean, he's still a person.
I'm very glad that I can find support here... thank you all. I'm trying my best to follow through with this. I'll continue to leave my phone off.

Follow the no contact rule. Nothing from him, nothing to him. You're doing great.
Your mom is absolutely right in this matter. A breakup needs to be clean. It's a skill that many learn in high school.
If you contact him it will hurt even worse.
It's like you have a bodyguard protecting you from his texts. Keep it up. You'll pull through this and feel okay again.
