I thought it would be good for someone like me who isn't good at mingling, and could benefit from a structured time to talk to someone new, but no way. There is time before, during an intermission, and after that you are supposed to mingle. Talk about awkward! Thank god I don't mind sitting by myself anymore. Plus when I did talk to the "dates" it just ended up being 8 minutes of stupid small talk, for the most part.

Also, I went to an event for an age group that I am smack in the middle of, but everyone looked like they could have been my uncle or aunt and they weren't even presentable- I mean, I didn't dress up but I wore a causal dress and strappy sandals. Everyone else looked like they had kinda stopped trying. And once again, I re-learned that I almost never have anything to say to anyone my own age (unless they also still go to punk shows).

Ugh. I bolted out of there!

Anyone else ever try this?

nope. Always sounded like exactly what is
WORST about the whole pick-up issue.

Though, I suppose that one could go
in with a conversation 'agenda', but
I suspect that people would REALLY
think I was weird then.

Talking at Punk Shows? Geeze girl, you're
not moshing enough, if that's the case.

I feel that one cannot get to know someone in an unbelievably small time period. That's why I am against speed dating.

Well, there is time between bands and I hang out with hardcore kids, so... But anyway, I don't mosh. Only to bands with lyrics made for kids with low self-esteem, like Crime in Stereo, Have Heart, and Modern Life is War, and then I'm more of a pile-on, singalong type. At regular punk shows I did sometimes but there are never good ones here anymore. I'm too physically awkward to really dance with hardcore kids. Oh and I like the present shape of my nose.

Not too fond of where punk went,
since it's inception. But, I usually
find some local, punk-inspired bands
that are well worth it.

As to the moshing, well, I'll jump in a bit,
but mostly, it cramps my style too much
to actually dance. I'd be afraid of hurting
someone other than just me. Walls are safer.

I've pretty much only ever liked hardcore, whether UK or American style. You are in Oregon though, that must be rough-- I love crust but there were always a lot of obnoxious crusties, and now that scene has gone completely downhill from there.

As far as speed dating, I don't think it's meant to be more than a brief and lighthearted introduction, upon which you can build if you so choose. I thought it would be good for me in theory, because the intitial contact is where I have trouble, but nah.

(If I could crank my face up to raise an eyebrow, I would. . .)

I may live in Oregon, but I have lived in Boston, as well, and I will stay in Oregon, thank you very much. Tell me what 'crust' is. . .you know we were the nexus of 'grunge'.

I had to look this up...I didn't even know what it was.

"Men and women are rotated to meet each other over a series of short "dates", usually lasting from 3 to 8 minutes depending on the organization running the event. At the end of each interval, the organizer rings a bell or clinks a glass to signal the participants to move on to the next date. At the end of the event participants submit to the organizers a list of who they would like to provide their contact information to. If there is a match, contact information is forwarded to both parties. Contact information cannot be traded during the initial meeting, in order to reduce pressure (especially on women) to accept or reject a suitor to their face."

You've got to be kidding me.

See.emotional whack-a-mole!

A typical Whac-A-Mole machine consists of a large, waist-level cabinet with five holes in its top. Each hole contains a single plastic mole and the machinery necessary to move it up and down. There is also a large, soft, black mallet approximately the size of a small watermelon and a three-digit readout of the current player's score and, on later models, a best score of the day readout. The mallet is usually attached to the game by a rope in order to prevent patrons from walking away with it.
Gameplay
Once the game starts, the moles will begin to pop up from their holes at random. The object of the game is to force the individual moles back into their holes by hitting them directly on the head with the mallet, thereby adding to the player's score. If the player does not strike a mole within a certain time or with enough force, it will eventually sink back into its hole with no score. Although gameplay starts out slow enough for most people to hit all of the moles that rise, it gradually increases in speed, with each mole spending less time above the hole and with more moles outside of their holes at the same time. After a designated time limit, the game ends, regardless of the skill of the player. The final score is based upon the number of moles that the player struck.

I know. How can you finish up in less than
eight minutes?

Plus, wouldn't it be hard to get ready for the
next one?

I have been trying not to mention how many men could easily accomplish the first one
and how many of them would not be up for the second one...

but I couldn't resist!

At my age, it takes longer than that to get started,
period.
